Job summary

Lied Center of Kansas is seeking student hourly crew to assist with setup/tear-down for events, operate lights, audio, cameras, and video projections, and provide stage and production support under supervision of full-time staff. The role includes equipment maintenance and working with a large technical crew.

Applicants must have a flexible schedule, adhere to online scheduling, and be able to communicate clearly by email. Summer and weekday blocks available; remote work not offered.

  • Assist with setup and tear-down of events, including lights, curtains, arbors, shells and large ensembles.
  • Operate technical systems during events: lighting consoles, audio, cameras, and video projections.
  • Provide stage and production support alongside professional staff to ensure successful performances and events.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of equipment: replace lamps, fix cables, and upkeep technical systems.
  • Work with a 50+ member crew, meet deadlines, participate in training and support general production tasks.

Job description

Position Overview

The Lied Center of Kansas serves the state’s flagship university, students and the greater community by functioning as a catalyst for the arts, creativity, engagement and community building. The ideal candidate will be able to follow directions diligently and work well with others.

Job Description

35%- Members of the Student Technical Crew are responsible for assisting with the set-up and tear-down of Lied Center events, including hanging and focusing lights, moving curtains, loading and unloading counterweight arbors, setting up and striking acoustical shells and large music ensembles, laying dance floors, and loading and unloading equipment.

25%- Students will assist with the operation of technical systems during events, including running lighting consoles, setting up and running audio systems, operating cameras, and running video projections.

15%- Students will provide stage and production support, working alongside professional staff to ensure successful execution of professional music, dance, theatrical tours, university ensemble performances, organizational events, and community events.

10%- Students will help maintain and repair equipment, including changing lamps, repairing cables, maintaining technical systems, and supporting the upkeep of facility equipment.

10%- Students will work as part of a 50+ member technical crew team, meeting deadlines, participating in training, completing general production tasks as assigned, and otherwise supporting the technical aspects of the facility under the supervision of full-time technical staff.

5%- Students will assist with costume and production area support, including laundering and pressing costumes and helping maintain clean and organized production spaces.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to adhere to an online-based scheduling system.
  • Must be able to communicate in a clear, timely and consistent manner using email correspondence as evidenced by application materials.
  • Must have a flexible schedule as evidenced by application materials.
  • 2 two-hour blocks of time available during weekdays, not including noon - 1pm.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in concert, theatre, or video production as evidenced by application materials.
  • Working knowledge of stagecraft with relevant background (ex: fly crew, sound, electrician, carpenter, prop handler, costumes, camera operator, etc.) as evidenced by application materials.
Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
  • Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
  • This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
