Job summary

Durham School Services is seeking a part-time Bus Assistant to support a driver in safely transporting students. You will aid with entering and exiting the bus, assist with seating and restraints, and help maintain order and safety during trips.

The role emphasizes professionalism, strong communication, and proper conduct with students, parents, and school staff. Training, safety meetings, and a flexible schedule are provided.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age (19 in NY for School Bus Assistants)
• Must meet physical and medical requirements
• Must complete and pass training and attend safety meetings
• Must have attention to detail and dexterity to use restraints and secure wheelchairs
• Ability to relate to and work well with children
• Ability to maintain effective pupil behavior management
• High level of professionalism and diplomacy when interacting with students and parents
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to lift and assist students when necessary

Responsibilities

• Assist students with entering or exiting the bus safely.
• Seat students using belts, car seats, or restraints.
• Monitor passengers to ensure safety and conduct rules are followed.
• Manage student behavior with positive discipline per policy.
• Document and report violations to the appropriate authority.
• Assist in emergency evacuations of the vehicle.
• Ensure students take their belongings when leaving the bus.
• Keep the interior clean and presentable with the driver.
• Complete required paperwork and submit to the appropriate department.
