Job summary

Lamar University’s College of Engineering seeks a Student Assistant to support daily office operations, greet visitors, and assist with mail, supplies, and events. The role requires reliability, professionalism, and the ability to work in a dynamic environment around the Lucas Engineering Building.

Availability includes flexible hours with some evenings and Saturdays; the position supports both COE staff and students while upholding the department’s Code of Conduct and core values of Justice,

Qualifications

  • Prior customer service or office experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Lamar University campus and services.
  • Availability of working flexible hours, including occasional evenings and Saturdays.
  • Commitment to the goals of the College of Engineering (COE) is required for continued employment.
  • Represent the engineering department and Lamar University professionally at all times, both in and out of uniform and on or off the clock.
  • Personal decisions outside the office can impact employment with the department.
  • Uphold COE core values: Justice, Honor, Integrity, and Courage.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist visitors at the front desk, serving as the first point of contact for the Chemical Engineering office
  • Stock and maintain the visitor coffee bar
  • Ensure printer stations are supplied with paper daily
  • Complete daily mail runs and deliver items as needed
  • Answer the main ChemE phone line (409-880-8784) and take accurate messages
  • Answer staff phone lines when necessary and relay detailed call notes
  • Prepare and pack materials for various events and outreach efforts
  • Take inventory of office supplies and materials as needed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional office environment
  • Provide administrative support to ChemE department and staff
  • Help students and visitors navigate the Lucas Engineering Building, including locating classrooms and faculty offices
  • Run errands such as on-campus deliveries
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors

WORK STUDY IS REQUIRED
The Student Assistant for the College of Engineering (COE) plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the office and serving as a representative of the college. This position requires flexibility, as responsibilities may vary from day to day. The ideal candidate is dependable, professional, and comfortable working in a dynamic environment that includes both indoor and outdoor tasks.

  • Greet and assist visitors at the front desk, serving as the first point of contact for the Chemical Engineering office
  • Stock and maintain the visitor coffee bar
  • Ensure printer stations are supplied with paper daily
  • Complete daily mail runs and deliver items as needed

  • Limit phone use: Keep phones on silent/vibrate; use only for emergencies or after completing all tasks and checking in with your supervisor
Hours of Operation
  • Regular Office Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (excluding holidays)
  • Weekly Schedule: Set for the entire semester
  • Exclusions: No work required during Thanksgiving, Winter Holiday Breaks, Spring Break, Summer Break, and Finals Weeks
  • Work Requirements:
    • Minimum of 12 hours per week
    • Maximum of 19.5 hours per week
