Job summary

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is seeking a Structures Design Engineer I to join the Structures Design Office in Tallahassee. The role supports development of the Structures Manual, bulletins, and design tasks for in-house bridge projects, with emphasis on coordination within the OneFDOT team.

Qualified candidates will have PE licensure per Florida Statute 471, familiarity with FDOT standards and AASHTO LRFD, and the ability to interpret road/bridge drawings.

Qualifications

• Registration as a Professional Engineer under Florida Statute 471.
• Knowledge of FDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction and related manuals.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply structural/roadway drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing and publishing the Structures Manual and related Bulletins.
• Perform design tasks for in-house bridge design projects and related analyses.
• Contribute to development of design policies and procedures; review revisions to AASHTO LRFD specifications.
• Participate in research projects and review deliverables for quality.
• Support QA reviews of the Districts.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

• Assists in developing and publishing the Structures Manual. Assists in developing Structures Design Bulletins and posting to the Department’s website. Manages the Structures Manual Task List on SharePoint to coordinate revisions.
• Performs design tasks for in-house bridge design projects and participates in special project studies that include analysis, design, and calculations.
• Assists in developing and implementing proposals for new design policies and procedures. Reviews revisions to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Bridge Design Specifications. Assists with development of construction and material specifications originated in the Structures Design Office.
• Participate in various aspects of research projects including reviewing deliverables and implementing results.
• Assists in performing Quality Assurance Reviews (QARs) of the Districts.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Knowledge of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Structures Manual, Soils and Foundations Handbook, Bridge Load Rating Manual, FDOT Design Manual, Standard Plans for Road and Bridge Construction, Basis of Estimates Manual, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Production Criteria Handbook
• Knowledge of AASHTO Load-and-Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, Manual for Bridge Evaluation
• Knowledge of structural engineering practices and principles
• Knowledge of Computer Aided Design and Drafting software

Skills in:

• Skilled in solving engineering problems
• Skilled in utilizing structural design/analysis software, MathCad and Microsoft Office Programs
• Skilled in reading and interpreting structures and roadway construction plans

Ability to:

• Ability to prepare project scopes of services and staff hour estimates
• Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate with others, verbally and in writing
• Ability to adapt to other section needs
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:
