New York City Transit is seeking a Structure Maintainer — Group E (Plumber) to perform plumbing work across subway, surface and elevated structures. Under general supervision, install, repair, and maintain fixtures, pipes, vents, and water heaters, and support related maintenance tasks.

Candidates must meet NY State plumbing apprenticeship or journey-level experience requirements; may require CDL and pass background checks. Duties include handling tools, lifting, and working on various shifts.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year full-time apprenticeship program in the plumbing trade recognized by the NYS Department of Labor or equivalent.
  • Four years of full-time journey-level experience as a plumber in the plumbing trade.
  • Two years of journey-level experience plus completion of one of: two years as helper/trainee, or approved trade/tech school totaling 600 hours, or vocational degree in plumbing.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures in toilets, sinks and heating systems.
  • Test, dismantle, install and repair pipes, fixtures, vents and hot water heaters; keep records.
  • May serve as a flagger and respond to signals on tracks; load, unload and drive vans and trucks; perform related work.

Compensation:

Salary Range: The current minimum salary for Structure Maintainer – Group E is $37.16 per hour for a 40-hour week increasing to $43.72 per hour in the sixth year of service. These rates are subject to change. The benefits of this position include, but are not limited to, night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan and a pension plan.

Responsibilities:

Structure Maintainers — Group E, under general supervision, perform plumbing work in MTA New York City Transit’s subway, surface and elevated structures, including stations, enclosures, tunnel and related buildings. They install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures in toilets, sink rooms and heating systems; clean, test, dismantle, install and repair pipes, fixtures, vents and hot water heaters; keep records, perform other structural work when necessary, including incidental painting; may serve as a flagger and respond appropriately to signals on the tracks; load, unload and drive vans and trucks; and perform related work.

Some of the physical activities performed by Structure Maintainers — Group E and environmental conditions experienced are: crouching while working in confined spaces; climbing and descending ladders and stairs; distinguishing colors of lights; making visual and tactile inspections; using hand tools; responding to sounds and warning bells; lifting and carrying heavy tools and equipment; wearing a respirator; and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Special Working Conditions: Structure Maintainers — Group E may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  1. Graduation from a four-year full-time apprenticeship program in the plumbing trade recognized by the N.Y. State Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Labor, or any state apprenticeship council which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor; or
  2. Four years of full-time journey-level experience (i.e. fully-trained, knowledgeable, proficient and competent) as a plumber in the plumbing trade; or
  3. Two years of full-time journey-level experience (i.e. fully-trained, knowledgeable, proficient and competent) as a plumber in the plumbing trade, plus completion of one of the following listed below before obtaining your journey-level experience:

a. Two years of full-time experience as a helper, apprentice or trainee performing or assisting in the plumbing trade; or

b. Graduation from an approved trade school or technical school, with a major course of study in plumbing or a closely related field, totaling 600 hours; or

c. Graduation from a vocational high school with a major course of study in plumbing; or

d. An Associate degree or a higher degree in plumbing, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university.

Some examples of acceptable experience include: Pipe Welder, Pipefitter, Master Plumber, Plumbing Installer, Residential Plumber, Service Plumber

Some examples of unacceptable experience include: Maintenance Technician, Handyman, Porter, Drain and Sewer Cleaner, Contractor

If you have qualifying part-time experience, it will be credited on a prorated basis.

The vocational high school, technical school, or trade school must be approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization. The college or university must be accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education, and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Candidates may be asked to complete an education and experience test paper and also participate in one or more of the following assessments: written, practical skills and/or structured interview.

Requirements to be Appointed:

Driver License Requirement: At the time of appointment, you must possess either:

  1. A Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in the State of New York with no restrictions that would preclude the performance of the duties of a Structure Maintainer — Group E; or
  2. A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York and a Learner Permit for a Class B CDL valid in the State of New York with no restrictions that would preclude the performance of the duties of a Structure Maintainer — Group E

If you qualify under “2” above, your appointment will be subject to the receipt of a Class B CDL valid in the State of New York with no restrictions no later than six months into the probationary period. If you fail to successfully receive the Class B CDL, valid in the State of New York, with no disqualifying restrictions, your employment will be terminated.

Commercial Motor Vehicle Driving Experience in the Military or New York National Guard: If you are an active member or former member (discharged in the past year) of the military or New York National Guard and have experience driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle in the military or New York National Guard, you may be eligible for a waiver of the New York State commercial driving skills test through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. If you believe that you may be eligible for this waiver, you must apply for the waiver through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Medical Requirement: Medical guidelines have been established for the position of Structure Maintainer — Group E. You will be examined to determine whether you can perform the essential functions of the position. Where appropriate, a reasonable accommodation will be provided for a person with a disability to enable him or her to perform the essential functions of the job.

Drug Screening Requirement: You must pass a drug screening in order to be appointed, and if appointed, you will be subject to random drug and alcohol tests for the duration of your employment. Additionally, if you have tested positive on a drug or alcohol test or had a refusal to test during pre- employment or while employed by a Federal DOT-regulated employer during the applicable period, you must have completed the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation, referral and education/treatment process required by federal law in order to be appointed to this safety-sensitive position.

Residency: New York City residency is not required for this position.

English Requirement: You must be able to understand and be understood in English to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Proof of Identity: Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you must be able to prove your identity and your right to obtain employment in the United States prior to employment with MTA Bus Company.

Additional Information

Training: You may be required to undergo a formalized training course during your probationary period. Failure to successfully complete the training course may result in termination.

Probationary Period: You will be required to complete a probationary period. If you do not successfully complete the probationary period, you may be terminated.
