Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform multi-pass welds in various positions using different welding techniques.
• Complete welding qualification tests at Newport News welding school.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and PPE training requirements.

Overview

Chipton-Ross is seeking multiple Structural Welder (Pulse Arc) for a contract opportunity in Newport News, VA.

Basic Qualifications

• Four years of NNS or naval shipyard experience as a first‑class welder.
• Required skills:
  • Multi‑pass fillet and butt welds in all positions using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GMAW‑P (Pulse Arc).
  • Heating with oxygen/propane heating torch.
  • Experience working in physically demanding environments (shipboard, sub‑assemblies, ladders, staging, etc.).
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations for shipbuilding.
  • Air Carbon Arc Gouging proficiency.
  • Ability to properly use fillet and butt weld gauges.
• Welding qualification tests:
  • All‑position (2G, 3G, 4G) SMAW.
  • All‑position FCAW.
  • Horizontal GMAW.
  • All‑position GMAW‑P.
  • Air Carbon Arc Gouging proficiency test.
• Tests to be completed at the Newport News welding school:
  • A: All Welding Qualification Tests – SMAW (6 hours)
  • B: All Welding Qualification Tests – FCAW (12 hours)
  • C: All Welding Qualification Tests – GMAW (4 hours)
  • Visual Inspection of Welds Level I (4 hours)
  • Welder Vision Test (5 minutes)
  • Air Carbon Arc Gouging Proficiency Test (1 hour)
• PPE training: general requirements, eye and face protection, head protection, foot protection, hand and body protection, hearing protection, body harness-personal fall arrest systems (PFAS), and position device systems.
• Special requirement: Must be able to pass the Pulse Arc weld test.

Preferred Qualifications

• Nickel/Copper experience is a plus, but not required.

Required Education

• High school diploma or GED (accredited school).

Full‑time, all shifts.
