Job summary

Smith Industries Ltd in Texas is hiring a structural welder/fitter to join SI Utility on fabricating steel utility poles and related structures. You will read blueprints, weld to specs, and work with quality control to ensure integrity of components.

The role is full-time, hourly (non-exempt) with benefits and opportunities for growth in a growing field.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 1+ years of structural welding and fitting experience.
• Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
• Knowledge of AWS D1.1 and industry codes.
• Ability to operate cutting and welding equipment safely.

Responsibilities

• Measure, cut, shape, and fit metal components for poles.
• Weld or bolt pieces to form framework and supports per specs.
• Read engineering blueprints and determine job requirements.
• Operate welding equipment and related tools efficiently.
• Inspect pieces for defects and verify they meet specs.
• Follow safety policies and wear PPE; report issues promptly.
• Operate forklift, man lift, and scissor lift as needed.

Essential Duties:

• Measure, cut, shape, and fit metal components to assemble structural forms for steel utility poles
• Weld or bolt pieces together to build framework and supports according to specifications
• Read and interpret engineering blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine job requirements
• Operate welding equipment and related tools efficiently and accurately
• Inspect work pieces for defects and measure with a straightedge or template to confirm they meet specifications
• Inspect and repair all defects and discontinuities before calling the Quality Control Inspector
• Work with the Quality Control department to repair parts that have not passed inspection
• Dismantle assemblies or cut scrap metal using a flame-cutting torch or plasma-arc equipment, including setting up oxygen and fuel gas hoses
• Operate forklift, man lift, and scissor lift, and work from ladders and scaffolds
• Report discrepancies and safety issues to the shop foreman, and complete assigned tasks promptly to keep production moving
• Follow all safety policies, wear required PPE, and report all incidents immediately; stop work when a job cannot be done safely
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Experience And Education

• High school diploma or GED
• 1+ years of structural welding and fitting experience

Skills and Abilities

• Able to read blueprints, drawings, and specifications
• Able to learn and follow AWS D1.1 and other applicable industry codes
• Experience with thermal cutting equipment (flame-cutting torch and plasma-arc)
• Above-average communication and organizational skills
• Team player with a high level of dedication
• Experience with GMAW (metal-cored wire) groove welds in the horizontal (2G) position

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Stand and walk up to 90% of the workday
• Occasionally bend, squat, and climb ladders and stairways
• Occasionally lift up to 40 lbs
• Judge weights, distances, and heights
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience fabricating steel utility poles or structural steel
• Forklift, man lift, and scissor lift experience
