Job summary

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) seeks a skilled trades worker for the R3, Section 6 buildings in Colorado. You will perform building maintenance, repairs, and remodels across interior and exterior elements, including doors, windows, walls, ceilings, and gutters, using a range of hand and power tools.

Responsibilities include preventative maintenance of swamp coolers and HVAC units, snow removal support, traffic control setup, and maintaining safety through PPE.

Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades.
  • Combination of related education and experience equal to four (4) years.
  • Ability to obtain CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and CDL Class A within 120 days.
  • Must obtain Certified Operator weed spray license with the Right of Way category within 12 months of hire.
  • Must attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora.

  • Building maintenance repair, replace, preservation, remodel and install components such as doors, windows, roofs, locks, walls, ceilings, and gutters.
  • Repair or replace carpet, tile, lighting, plumbing and electrical fixtures; perform snow removal and related tasks.
  • Operate and maintain equipment to support skilled labor during maintenance activities.
  • Set up traffic control zones and provide support during snow removal.
  • Maintain signs, delineators, guard rails and related safety features.
  • Attend safety training and participate in tailgate safety talks.

About the Work Unit

The purpose of the Maintenace work unit exists to maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material, ensuring a safe roadway for the traveling public.

About The Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a vacancy for an experienced trades worker for our R3, Section 6 buildings. This position will perform building maintenance repair, replace, preservation or remodel to include installing doors, windows, locks, walls, ceilings, and gutters. Position will repair or replace carpet, tile, concrete, lighting, plumbing and electrical fixtures; build shelves, move and repair furniture, snow removal and related trades. This position will use power hand tools including circular saw, table saw, drills and a variety of tools and equipment used for building construction and snow removal.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
  • Building maintenance repair, replace, preservation, remodel and or install exhaust fans, doors, windows, roofs, locks, heaters, walls, ceilings, gutters, garage doors and openers, carpet, tile, concrete, lighting, plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and make repairs to all swamp coolers, heat and air conditioning units and fuel pumps by adjusting and changing belts, seals, gaskets, lubricating motors, cleaning and repairing water and fuel lines, changing filters, replacing motors, fans, bearings, repair and remodel duct work.
  • Perform bridge deck repair, including crack and joint sealing, roto-milling of both flexible and rigid bridge decks;
  • Perform bridge superstructure maintenance and repair, including painting, bridge curb repair, wheel guard repair, and rail repair;
  • Perform section wide right of way weed spraying
  • Perform section wide culvert cleaning with a Vac Truck.
  • Perform section wide right of way mowing.
  • Cleaning debris from building roofs, drains, and walkways;
  • Maintain, replace, and install signs, delineators, fence, guard rail, cable rail, concrete rail, attenuators, etc.
  • Set up traffic control zones.
  • Provide support for area Maintenance Patrols during snow removal and de-icing operations.
  • Operate and maintain equipment to effectively support the skilled labor during maintenance activities.
  • Maintain a state of operational readiness.
  • Utilize technology to monitor weather conditions to be able to report to work in a timely manner and in emergency situations.
  • Perform and assist in the daily planning and scheduling of activities in assigned work area, including temporary assignments throughout the state.
  • Ensure interactions with internal and external customers are professional. Communicate effectively and professionally. Exhibit acceptance of diversity in providing effective customer service to diverse groups of internal and external customers.
  • Work with the priority of safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public at all times.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and abide by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Attend safety training and participate in tailgate safety talks and safety engagements.
  • Continuously learn and develop job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Primary schedule 4- 10 hour shifts in the summer months, and 5- 8 hour shifts in the winter months
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
  • Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment as appropriate
  • Required to work with chemicals and cleaning products
  • Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10 - 20'
  • Occasionally lift or team lift 50+ lbs.
  • Required to use various hand and power tools
  • Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions
  • Must use computers to accomplish everyday work duties

Experience Only
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades (carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, painting or masonry).
OR
Education And Experience

A combination of related education and experience equal to four (4) years.

Education- formalized apprenticeship program or higher-level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocation or trades school. Experience in structural trades (carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, painting or masonry). Documentation of this must be submitted with your application.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must obtain your CDL Permit within 30days of hire and your Commercial Driver's License Class A within 120 days of hire, with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.
  • If you have a non-Colorado Commercial Driver's License, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire. If you currently live outside of Colorado and relocate to reside in Colorado, you must transfer your CDL to Colorado within 30 days of relocation.
  • Must be able to obtain your Certified Operator weed spray license with the Right of Way category within 12 months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks. More information in the supplemental information section.
  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.

  • Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.
  • May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to workstation.
  • New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.
