STRUCTURAL PRINCIPAL ENGINEER – SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA

JOB SUMMARY

The Structural Principal Engineer leads project teams, manages client relationships, provides technical leadership, oversees structural design, prepares engineering analyses and reports, and ensures project success from concept through construction. The position includes mentoring staff and driving business development.

JOB DUTIES
  • Develop design fee estimates and proposals for all project types ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and within scope and budget.
  • Establish, develop and maintain strong client relationships to support ongoing and future work.
  • Conduct business development activities and secure new opportunities.
  • Lead structural design efforts for a variety of projects and provide guidance to engineers and design staff.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to staff, providing guidance on engineering principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Analyse complex structural engineering challenges and develop effective solutions.
  • Oversee preparation of construction documents and details for structures conforming to Cannon standards.
  • Responsible charge for the design and detailing of structural systems.
  • Effectively manage quality assurance and quality control.
  • Communicate effectively with various departments, clients, and agencies.
  • Coordinate with permitting agencies.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment through effective communication and leadership; participate in professional organizations and community activities to support regional growth and company visibility.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering or Civil Engineering.
  • Active California Structural Engineer (SE) license required.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in structural analysis, design, and detailing of buildings and structures.
  • Minimum of 8 years of project management experience, including scope, schedule, and budget oversight.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience managing engineering teams.
  • Proven track record of managing a wide variety of simple to complex projects, meeting deadlines, and delivering within budget.
  • Demonstrated success in business development and client relationship management.
  • Advanced knowledge of the California Building Code and ASCE 7, with the ability to apply and communicate requirements effectively.
  • Experience designing structural systems using timber, concrete, steel, and masonry.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as RISA, ETABS, SAFE, and SAP2000.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or Revit.
