Basic Function

The basic function of the structural fitter is responsible for assembling metal parts to create finished sheet or structural metal projects.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Have layout and fitting experience with miscellaneous metal and structural steel (e.g., beams, columns, base plates, handrails, stairs, etc.)
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and templates
• Lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated parts of structural metals according to blueprints and layout specifications for welding or riveting
• Use tools such as jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, hammers, etc., to cut, bend, and straighten metal
• Locate and mark work-piece bending and cutting lines, considering stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other specifications
• Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to workpieces using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and soapstone
