Job summary

ATCS is excited to welcome interns to our 2027 Summer Internship Program. The Structural Engineering Intern will work with engineers on bridge and transportation infrastructure projects, gaining hands-on experience in design, analysis, and documentation.

You will assist with calculations, drafting, fieldwork support, and project deliverables while developing professional skills in a collaborative environment. May/June through August 2027 at our Altoona, PA office.

Qualifications

• Pursuing Civil/Structural Engineering degree with interest in structural analysis and transportation.
• Willingness to learn structural design and bridge concepts.
• Strong analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work well in a team and follow guidance.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; exposure to engineering software is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist with design and analysis of bridges and transportation structures.
• Support engineering calculations, data collection, and documentation.
• Help prepare structural plans, drawings, and project deliverables.
• Use engineering software to support design and analysis tasks.
• Participate in fieldwork and bridge inspections when opportunities arise.

Structural Engineering Intern - Summer 2027

ATCS is excited to welcome interns to our 2027 Summer Internship Program! We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated students who are ready to gain hands‑on experience, build their technical skills, and learn from experienced professionals.

The 2027 Summer Internship Program will run from May/June through August 2027.

This internship will support our Structural Engineering team in our Altoona, PA office.

At ATCS, our interns have the opportunity to gain meaningful, hands‑on experience while contributing to real projects. As a Structural Engineering Intern, you’ll work alongside engineers and other professionals on a variety of bridge and transportation infrastructure projects, developing your technical skills while gaining firsthand experience in structural engineering.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting engineers with the design and analysis of bridges and other transportation structures.
• Assisting with engineering calculations, data collection, and technical documentation.
• Supporting the preparation of structural plans, drawings, reports, and other project deliverables.
• Using engineering and design software to assist with structural design and analysis.
• Assisting with bridge inspections and fieldwork, as opportunities arise.
• Collaborating with engineers and other team members to complete project tasks.
• Participating in project meetings and gaining exposure to the day‑to‑day work of a structural engineering team.
• Assisting with other technical and administrative tasks as needed.

Desired Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
• Interest in structural engineering, bridge design, and transportation infrastructure.
• Previous coursework in structural analysis, mechanics of materials, or structural design is preferred.
• Previous internship or related experience is a plus, but not required.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team‑oriented environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
• Exposure to MicroStation, AutoCAD, structural analysis/design software, or other engineering software is a plus.
