Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Clayton, Missouri seeks a senior structural engineer to apply knowledge of materials, structural analysis, steel and concrete design on industrial, power, oil and gas facilities.

You will lead and mentor junior engineers, produce design calculations, prepare specs, perform reviews, and coordinate with clients and vendors; some travel may be required. The role offers a hybrid schedule with in-office work 3 days per week.

Qualifications

  • Requires a BSCE (MSCE preferred) from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Six or more years in industrial, power, oil & gas facility design with steel/concrete focus.
  • PE license or ability to earn one is required.
  • Experience writing/ supporting structural engineering calculations.
  • Knowledge of design codes: IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI 318.

Responsibilities

  • Create calculations, documents, and specifications for structural designs.
  • Conduct structural analyses including wind, seismic, blast, and pressurization.
  • Guide junior engineers and coordinate detailed design phases.
  • Review work and provide independent checks of calculations and drawings.
  • Coordinate with clients, vendors, and project managers; travel as needed.

Description
  • This position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design. As a member of an engineering and design team, you will work on a range of industrial, power, oil and gas facilities.
  • Project responsibilities will include creating calculations, document designs, and specifications. Additionally, you will be conducting structural analyses, which include loading conditions such as wind, seismic, blast, and pressurization.
  • You will be responsible for guiding junior-level engineers and designers in structural engineering design efforts, including providing guidance with the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of structural engineering work.
  • You will work on challenging assignments that include investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of structural engineering issues.
  • Develop integrated structural designs and perform supporting calculations for the planned work.
  • Prepare technical specifications for structural materials.
  • Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Coordinate and provide guidance to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure a complete and timely design.
  • Perform reviews of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and present findings and recommendations to clients and peers.
  • There is the potential for you to travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.

This position is based on a hybrid work schedulebased in our Clayton, Missouri office, located within the St. Louis metropolitan area and will require in-office work 3 days per week.

Essential skills and experience:

  • This position requires a BSCE (MSCE preferred) from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program.
  • Six or more years of working as a member of a project team environment in the design of industrial, power, oil and gas facilities, with a focus on the analysis of steel structures and concrete foundations and supports for new facilities, or modifications or replacements for existing facilities.
  • PE license or ability to earn a PE license is required.
  • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for Structural Engineering calculations.
  • Technically knowledgeable of the practical application of structural engineering including analysis for structural supports, loads, and design integrity.
  • Proficiency with any of the following programs: MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, STRUDL, or ANSYS.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • This position may require occasional travel.

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Construction and start-up experience is a plus.
