Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) in Lenexa, Kansas seeks a Structural Engineer Intern to assist with standards, tools, and project support. You’ll help develop calculations, design sketches, and coordination with multiple disciplines while growing your technical and professional skills.

The internship emphasizes learning, adherence to KIWE quality plans, and collaboration on EPC‑style projects in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural Engineering, or Civil or Architectural Engineering with a Structural emphasis from an ABET accredited college or university.
• GPA above 3.0 preferred
• Completed Fundamentals of Structural Analysis course which includes computer application.
• Completed a Strength of Materials course with statics and dynamics application.
• Completed Fundamentals of Steel Design and/or Fundamentals of Concrete Design courses.
• Comfort with basic spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs.
• Familiar with basic structural analysis software, engineering software, and basic CAD software for reviewing drafter’s work.
• Knowledge of SAP2000 or RISA 3D, MathCad, Revit and Navisworks is highly desirable.

Responsabilités

• Develop familiarity with departmental design standards and KIWE policies.
• Contribute to the KIWE Quality Plan requirements and objectives.
• Prepare basic engineering calculations and standard design sketches.
• Calculate cost and quantity estimates from collected data.
• Assist in checking calculations, drawings, and documents.
• May inspect construction site to monitor progress and conformance to drawings.
• Coordinate design interfacing issues with other disciplines.
• Support ensuring project schedules and standards are followed.

Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) is seeking a Structural Engineer Intern for the Lenexa, Kansas office. We are looking for ideal candidates to grow the Kiewit team by helping establish, maintain, and improve company standards and tools while also utilizing these standards and tools to contribute to project success. Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts. Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career.

Location

This position is based in our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities

• Develops familiarity with departmental design standards, applicable engineering codes and KIWE policies, guidelines and standards.
• Understands, contributes to, and adheres to the KIWE Quality Plan requirements and objectives.
• Prepares basic engineering calculations and following standard methods and principles used in similar engineering analyses.
• Prepares basic design sketches for drafting and incorporation into final plans.
• Calculates cost and quantity estimates for project based on analysis of collected data.
• Assists in checking various calculations, prepared drawings and documents as assigned and within established guidelines.
• May inspect construction site to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering drawings, specifications, and construction.
• Checks vendor's drawings for structural construction commodities.
• Communicates with other disciplines to coordinate design interfacing issues.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural Engineering, or Civil or Architectural Engineering with a Structural emphasis from an ABET accredited college or university.
• GPA above 3.0 preferred

• Should be comfortable with the use of basic spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs.
• Must be familiar with basic structural analysis software, engineering software, and basic CADD software for reviewing drafter’s work.
• Highly desirable that the individual will have specific knowledge of SAP2000 or RISA 3D, MathCad, Revit and Navisworks.
