Job description

In this role, you will:

  1. Take engineering responsibility for the structural design of your projects. Analyze and design full building systems as a licensed PE, tracking loads from roof to foundation, choosing systems that use material efficiently, and working out solutions for conditions that do not follow a standard detail.
  2. Produce the calculations, models, and documents the building gets built from. Develop and coordinate analytical models, calculations, construction documents, and project specifications in Revit, AutoCAD, RISA, RAM, and the firm's specification platform, detailed well enough that the contractor is not guessing in the field.
  3. Make the code and standards calls on your own judgment. Apply the governing building codes, design standards, and jurisdictional requirements to assigned work, and coordinate with clients, review agencies, and other authorities having jurisdiction when a requirement needs interpretation.
  4. Build the structural work plan and hold the schedule and budget. Identify the tasks, sequence them, and run the structural effort across several small to moderate projects at once, or a significant portion of a large one. Tell project leadership about scope changes and schedule risk while there is still time to do something about it.
  5. Coordinate the structural scope with the rest of the project team. Work directly with architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, outside consultants, and contractors to settle technical conflicts as they come up, and contribute structural scope, schedule, and staffing needs to project planning.
  6. Document existing conditions in the field and set the analytical approach. Investigate renovation and addition work on site, record what is actually there, and establish engineering assumptions you can defend, including where an assumption carries risk.
  7. Run construction administration on your projects with minimal oversight. Answer RFIs, review submittals and shop drawings, and confirm every response holds to the design intent and the applicable codes before it goes out.
  8. Review the work of junior staff and catch problems before they leave the office. Check their calculations, models, drawings, and specifications against the established design approach, resolve coordination and documentation inconsistencies, and carry what quality control reviews turn up into the next project instead of repeating it.
  9. Bring junior engineers and design staff along. Give direct technical guidance on their tasks and documents, tell them what is wrong and why, and share project experience in Lessons Learned sessions and technical discussions while you build your own judgment on harder problems alongside senior engineers.
