Job summary

HDR is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services group in Madison or Milwaukee, WI. You will lead design efforts across healthcare, civic, tech, and commercial projects, often in high-seismic areas.

You will collaborate with architects and other engineers, coordinate design teams through development and documentation, and conduct site reviews with project managers to ensure timely delivery and quality workmanship. HDR emphasizes mentorship and professional growth.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the position offered (PE or P.Eng)
• Previous structural engineer experience
• Proficiency with MS Office, AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar
• Experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
• Active participation in employee-owned culture

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with architects and other engineering discipline leads to develop designs and drive projects forward, leading small teams and mentoring EITs
• Coordinate the structural design team through design development and contract document phases
• Attend reviews with governing agencies for code compliance
• Lead design development and construction document sessions at project sites with the Project Manager
• Coordinate workload through design development and construction document phases to meet schedule
• Assist with interdisciplinary coordination, RFIs, change proposals, and incorporate changes into documents
• Perform site visits and lead construction administration efforts
• Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures and materials, and perform calculations
• Review structural documents for conflicts and adherence to standards

The Building Engineering Services (BES) group of MN/WI is looking for a Structural Engineer to join our growing team in Madison or Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is a terrific opportunity for a mid-career engineer to tackle a new challenge and help build a team in a new office. You will lead work independently on a wide variety of projects across numerous market sectors including healthcare, civic, tech, commercial, water, and light industrial projects, many of which are in high-seismic areas. You will be mentored by experienced and talented structural engineers in the Twin Cities and across the country, and have the opportunity to mentor and develop earlier-career engineers.

In the role of Structural Engineer, we'll count on you to:

• Collaborate with architects and other engineering discipline leads to develop designs and drive projects forward, working independently and/or leading small project teams and mentoring EIT’s.
• Independently coordinate the work of the structural design team through the design development and contract document phases of a project
• Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
• Conduct design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines
• Take responsibility for coordinating workload through design development and construction document phases to complete the documents on schedule
• Coordinate and assist with affected disciplines, with any addendum, requests for information, change proposal requests and change orders, and incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
• Perform site visits and lead construction administration efforts.
• Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations.
• Review structural documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines and best practices/industry standards.
• Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering; Structural emphasis
• 5-8 years of progressive structural engineering experience on projects of similar scale and complexity to HDR’s.
• Strong communication skills and emerging leadership aptitude with an entrepreneurial spirit.
• Structural Engineer (SE) License or qualification via NCEES exam to obtain SE in Illinois.
