Job summary

Mott MacDonald in Los Angeles is seeking a Structural Engineer with 4+ years of experience to join our Buildings team. You will deliver design concepts and detailed drawings for transportation and civil infrastructure projects, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across offices and sites.

You'll apply state-of-the-art analysis, focus on seismic design in California, mentor junior staff, and contribute to client meetings while maintaining a digital-by-default deliverable approach.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET‑accredited university.
• 4+ years of structural engineering experience.
• California seismic analysis and design experience.
• Proficiency in designing structures and foundations using concrete/steel.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
• PE license in California preferred.

Based inour Los Angeles office, theStructural Engineer will play a key technical role in the support and delivery of projects. Our Buildings portfolio spans a wide range of complex work, including transportation (rail/LRT/road),retainingwalls, underground and buried structures, transit station structures, and other civil infrastructure.

Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

• Developing conceptual, preliminary, and detailed final designs using industry-standard analysis and design software
• Actively participating in project, client, and team meetings
• Assisting and mentoring junior staff
• Reviewing, preparing, and modifying designs
• Analyzing and preparing type studies, reports, specifications, quantities, and estimates
• Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, including technicians and design professionals across offices
• Attending onsite meetings across project locations, including our growing markets in Los Angeles and Austin
• Gaining exposure to project, commercial, and client management
• Undertaking a ‘digital by default’ approach in deliverables

Candidate Specification

• A bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited university
• 4+ years of structural engineering experience
• Experience working with AASHTO, Caltrans, AREMA, ASCE, and CBC design codes and standards
• Experience with California seismic analysis and design
• Proficiency in designing structures and foundations using cast-in-place reinforced concrete, precast/prestressed concrete, post-tensioned concrete, and structural steel
• A methodical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to work independently
• Strong verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging clients and teams across multiple regions
• Excellent technical writing and attention to detail, including preparation of drawings and reports
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills across distributed teams
• A California Professional Engineer (PE) license

Benefits & Rewards

The expected salary for this position is $107k - $130k.

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
