The Structures Division provides structural engineering services with an emphasis on new design, repair, and rehabilitation of constructed works, as well as investigation and performance evaluation of structures. Separately, the Engineering Mechanics and Infrastructure (EMI) Division applies engineering mechanics, materials science, numerical simulation, innovative technologies, and collective expertise to solve our clients’ toughest problems in an inspiring work environment that nurtures life-long learning and growth. SGH works on challenging projects for owners, contractors, and other engineering firms across a wide spectrum of sectors, including nuclear and defense.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Reviewing and summarizing reinforced concrete design calculations and construction drawings, nonconformance reports, design change notices, and other construction-related documents.
  • Running automated computer program scripts to perform concrete strength checks, followed by manual verification to determine what passes or fails. Conducting further assessments, as needed, to qualify reinforced concrete structural walls and slabs; this may include section cuts, averaging, and other evaluations when automation is insufficient.
  • New design of steel structures, steel connection design and concrete embedded plate connection design using the following codes: ACI 318, ACI 349, AISC N 690, AISC manual of steel construction.
  • Working on a confidential project funded by the US government
  • Project start dates targeted for the earliest and will go until at least May 2026.

What You’ll Need:

  • Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required or a Bachelor's Degree w/minimum of 10 years' experience
  • Positions are available for 5+, 10+ and 15+ years of experience.
  • Taken classes in reinforced concrete design and steel design.
  • Must be able to pass a full 7-year background check.
  • Understand the behavior of reinforced concrete shear walls and slabs failing in flexure, shear, and compression.
  • Experience with the design of walls and slabs preferably in accordance with the design procedures specified in the Code Requirements for Nuclear Safety Related to Concrete (ACI 349), but extensive experience in the design per the Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318) will also be considered.
  • Design of new steel structures and steel connections using AISC manual of steel construction and AISC N690 (preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret reinforced concrete design and construction drawings and related documents required.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel construction drawings preferred. Strong teamwork, time management, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated initiative.
  • Smart and driven, and with some training, be productive on the project within a few weeks.
  • Experience in finite element analysis with software ANSYS is preferred, but not required.

Work Locations:

Remote work for experienced individuals 10+ years experience who are self motivated and have a strong work ethic and a suitably secure workspace will be considered on a case-by-case basis. SGH has offices in Boston MA, Waltham MA, Chicago IL, Atlanta GA, Houston TX, New York NY, Tampa, FL, Washington, DC.

The following work locations will be given preference:
