Job summary

Amentum is seeking a Structural Dynamics Engineer in Houston to perform dynamic analysis on spacecraft and lunar vehicles within NASA programs. You will execute FE checks, reductions, and coupled loads analyses, while scripting in Python and utilizing MSC NASTRAN with FEMAP.

The role requires strong communication, a BS in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, and experience with FEMAP/NASTRAN. Onsite work in Houston with competitive benefits and growth opportunities in a mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering required.
  • Experience with finite element models and coupled loads analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or C/C++.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with MSC NASTRAN and FEMAP as pre/post-processor.
  • Systems Engineering coursework or experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Component Mode Synthesis and Craig-Bampton reductions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform finite element model checks and dynamic model reductions.
  • Conduct coupled loads analysis and interpret results.
  • Develop simulation scripts in Python or similar.
  • Perform vibroacoustic and modal analyses for tests.
  • Review modal and structural data (analytical and test).
  • Support test plans and document results.
  • Correlate models to hardware using test data.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Structural Dynamics Engineer to join the team.

This position will be performing structural dynamic analysis on spacecraft and lunar vehicles in multiple NASA human spaceflight programs. This includes Orion, Gateway, Human Landing System, Commercial Crew Program, Lunar Terrain Vehicle, Pressurized Rover, and others.

The position will include some of the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform finite element model checks, dynamic model reductions, coupled loads analysis, and interpret results

  • Perform dynamic analyses using commercial and in-house codes, write new simulation scripts and code, typically with Python, as needed

  • Perform vibroacoustic analysis on finite element models in preparation for acoustic and random vibration tests

  • Perform modal analysis on finite element models in preparation for modal tests

  • Identify critical modes for a component or integrated system

  • Review and process modal and structural data (analytical and test)

  • Develop and/or review test plans and procedures, documenting test results

  • Perform signal processing on analytical and/or test data

  • Perform model correlation by adjusting analytical models based on test data to better align the model with actual hardware

  • Perform other duties as required

Requisition Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering with experience in the field or in a related area.

  • Must have excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Experience with desktop software applications, MS Office is required

  • Experience in finite element model manipulation and coupled loads analysis

  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, and/or C/C+ Requisition Preferences:

  • BS or MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or C/C++ Experience using MSC NASTRAN with FEMAP as a pre/post-processor

  • Experience or relative coursework in Systems Engineering

  • Experience or Proficiency with Component Mode Synthesis and Craig Bampton model reductions

Work Environment

Physical Requirements
