Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Structural Detailing Project Manager is responsible for converting engineering designs into accurate and comprehensive shop drawings for the fabrication and assembly of highway guardrail products and other steel structures. This position also manages assigned bridge rail, guardrail, solar, and related infrastructure projects from contract review through production and project completion.

The Structural Detailing Project Manager serves as a key point of coordination among customers, Sales, Engineering, Drafting, Purchasing, Production, Quality, and other stakeholders. This individual is responsible for maintaining clear communication, monitoring schedules and deliverables, identifying potential issues, and ensuring that project requirements are accurately translated into production-ready documentation. Success in this role requires structural detailing experience, strong project-management capabilities, excellent communication skills, and a solid understanding of structural steel fabrication and construction practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

Structural Detailing
  • Contract Review: Review contracts, purchase orders, customer drawings, specifications, and other project documents to accurately interpret project requirements, scope, deliverables, and structural components.
  • Prepare Shop Drawings: Utilize AutoCAD and other applicable design software to create detailed shop drawings, assembly drawings, erection plans, and production-ready documentation, ensuring accurate representations of steel components and connections.
  • Material Takeoffs: Perform precise material takeoffs to determine the quantity and type of steel and other materials required for fabrication, considering weight, dimensions, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Drawing Coordination: Coordinate with the VP of Operations, Drafting Manager, Engineering team, and other stakeholders to resolve discrepancies, conflicts, missing information, or modifications to design requirements.
  • Compliance with Codes and Standards: Ensure that drawings and project documentation comply with applicable state highway requirements, industry standards, customer specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Quality Control: Conduct thorough reviews of drawings, bills of materials, dimensions, quantities, and other technical documentation before submission for approval or release to production.
  • Fabrication Support: Collaborate closely with fabrication and production teams to communicate specifications, answer technical questions, provide clarifications, and resolve issues that may arise during manufacturing.
Project Management
  • Manage assigned bridge rail, guardrail, solar, and other infrastructure projects from contract review and planning through production, delivery, and closeout.
  • Serve as a primary internal point of contact for assigned projects, coordinating communication among Sales, Engineering, Drafting, Purchasing, Scheduling, Production, Quality, Shipping, and Management.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, priorities, milestones, submittal dates, approval timelines, production requirements, and delivery commitments.
  • Coordinate project kick-off meetings and ongoing project-status discussions to ensure responsibilities, deadlines, and expectations are clearly communicated.
  • Review project scope and requirements to identify potential technical, scheduling, material, fabrication, or delivery concerns before they affect production or the customer.
  • Track drawing submissions, customer approvals, revisions, requests for information, material availability, production progress, and other key project deliverables.
  • Communicate project status, risks, delays, scope changes, and outstanding decisions to internal stakeholders and customers in a timely and professional manner.
  • Coordinate and document drawing revisions, customer-requested changes, and scope changes to ensure affected departments are working from the most current information.
  • Partner with Sales and Management to identify work outside the original project scope and support the documentation of change orders, additional costs, or revised delivery requirements.
  • Facilitate the timely resolution of technical questions and project issues by engaging the appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate and organized project files, correspondence, drawings, approvals, schedules, change documentation, and other records.
  • Monitor multiple projects simultaneously and adjust priorities based on customer commitments, material availability, production capacity, and business needs.
  • Support project closeout activities, including confirmation of completed deliverables, resolution of outstanding items, and documentation of lessons learned.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with customers, contractors, engineers, vendors, and internal teams.
Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve detailing accuracy, project handoffs, communication, scheduling, material utilization, production readiness, and overall project execution.
  • Stay informed of advancements in structural steel detailing technology, project-management practices, design software, and industry standards.
  • Participate in post-project reviews and recommend improvements based on project outcomes and lessons learned.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum of three to five years of structural steel detailing experience.
  • Previous project-management, project-coordination, or technical project-lead experience within structural steel fabrication, construction, highway infrastructure, solar construction, or a related industry.
