Job summary

Thompson Engineering is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Structural Designer to build technical skills within a collaborative engineering environment. The role focuses on developing structural drawings and construction documents for bridges, waterfront structures, and transportation projects using AutoCAD and REVIT.

Qualifications

• Two-year degree or technical certification in CAD/Drafting or related field.
• 0-8+ years of structural design or drafting experience.
• Experience with AutoCAD is required; REVIT is preferred.
• Familiarity with DOT/AASHTO standards is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop and revise structural drawings and construction documents using AutoCAD and/or REVIT
• Assist with development of structural plans, elevations, sections, details, and related design documentation
• Support the design and detailing of bridges, retaining walls, transportation structures, and other infrastructure
• Translate engineering concepts, sketches, calculations, and markups into accurate design drawings
• Work closely with structural engineers and other project team members to support design development; learn and apply applicable DOT standards, AASHTO guidelines, building codes, and other project specific requirements
• Perform quality control reviews of drawings and design documents prepared by others
• Maintain organized project files and follow established CAD and corporate design standards
• Develop proficiency in Microstation and other Bentley software as applicable in addition to AutoCAD and REVIT
• Support project schedules, deadlines, and coordination with internal teams
• Participate in training and professional development to expand structural design capabilities
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project and department needs including site visits and field inspections

Position Summary

Thompson Engineering is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Structural Designer with AutoCad and REVIT experience who is interested in building their technical skills and growing within a collaborative engineering environment.

The Structural Designer will assist with the development of structural plans, details, and construction documents for a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, bridges, transportation structures, retaining walls, buildings, and waterfront structures. The successful candidate will work closely with structural engineers and other design professionals to translate engineering concepts and design criteria into accurate, constructible drawings.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or technical certification in CAD, Drafting, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 0-8+ years of structural design or drafting experience
• Experience with AutoCAD required
• Experience with REVIT preferred
• Demonstrated experience supporting bridge, roadway, or transportation infrastructure projects
• MicroStation experience is a plus
• Familiarity with structural drawings, construction documents, or engineering plans preferred
• Ability to interpret engineering sketches, markups, specifications, and design criteria
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work
• Ability to learn new software, technical standards, and design processes
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with structural detailing for bridges, retaining walls, transportation structures, or other infrastructure
• Experience with additional Bentley tools (e.g., Microtation, OpenBridge Modeler, ProjectWise)
• Familiarity with DOT standards and AASHTO guidelines
• Experience preparing structural construction documents
• Technical degree or coursework in civil/structural engineering technology, drafting, or a related discipline
• Interest in developing long-term career in structural design
