Job summary

United Launch Alliance in Alabama is seeking a Strength Analyst to perform strength, fatigue and fracture analyses of propulsion and structural components, including non-linear analysis. You will create models, perform hand calculations, and provide strength inputs for new designs while reviewing 3-D layouts and drawings.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 2 years of related experience, with strong MS Office and UNIX/Linux proficiency and collaboration in

  • Ability to make design recommendations based on analysis results/experience
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential
  • General understanding of materials and material properties
  • Experience with Structural Analysis (tanks, adapters, brackets)
  • Experience analyzing propulsion hardware (tubing, ducting, flex joints)
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Experience working with component suppliers and development of spec requirements
  • Understanding of fatigue/fracture analysis tools and methodology
  • Understanding of bolted joint modeling and analysis
  • Understanding of GD&T standards and principles
  • Understanding of analysis best practices and underlying assumptions
  • Understanding of basic hand calculations

Responsibilities

  • Performing strength, fatigue and fracture analysis of propulsion and structural components, including non-linear analysis for the Recurring Structural Analysis Team.
  • Candidate will be required to create analysis models, perform hand calculations and have an understanding of analysis best practices to provide strength inputs and recommendations for new designs and installations.
  • Candidate will be required to review and approve 3-D engineering layouts, 3-D models, designs / drawings and 2-D drawing changes for a variety of propulsion, fluid system and mechanical system components.
  • Candidate will make engineering design recommendations with consideration of thermal, mechanical and pressure loading using appropriate material properties, configurations, safety factors, etc.
  • Analysis results will be documented in strength reports.
  • Candidate will support internal peer reviews, table top reviews and formal design reviews as needed.
  • Will also need to support fast paced design/analysis cycles and be able to evaluate hardware non-conformances to support production activities.
  • The engineer must be able to work with a minimal level of mentor oversight.

Job Overview & Responsibilities

As a Strength Analyst at ULA Job responsibilities include the following:

Experience with structural optimization techniques for mass savings

Experience integrating with system level analysis models (coupled loads models)

General knowledge of fabrication methods for mechanical hardware, such as machining, welding, processing and assembly

  • Knowledge of NASGRO fracture mechanics tool and ABAQUS
