Job summary

Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) is partnering to provide growth opportunities within a framework of leadership, competitive compensation, and rewarding career paths. Join our team on the ESSCA contract with MSFC, contributing to space systems development and certification through advanced structural analysis.

The role requires extensive FE expertise, collaboration with NASA centers, and leadership to guide analysts while interfacing with program stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • BS degree (MS or PhD preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution in Mechanical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering; or related field with emphasis in structural analysis is required.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience in finite element methods, empirical closed-form structural analysis techniques, and the assessment of failure mechanisms is required.
  • Experience conducting assessments and verification of Environmental Life Control Support System spaceflight equipment.
  • Knowledge of NASA and MSFC standards and specifications as well as experience with the design and analysis of joints containing mechanical fasteners, adhesives, welds, and composite/metallic interfaces.
  • Knowledge of one or more commercial Finite Element and CAD applications. Experience with FEM software: Femap, Simcenter, NASTRAN, Hypermesh, Hyperworks, Abaqus, Ansys Workbench.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proof of US Citizenship and STAR ID

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to fellow analysts while interfacing with program stakeholders and leaders.
  • Develop formal stress analysis packages for structural systems using strength of materials and finite element-based methods.
  • Provide inputs to preliminary designs and development deliveries of reports and presentations to management.
  • Collaborate with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware.

The analyst shall support the MSFC Space Systems Department in technical activities supporting the development of space systems structure, performing structural analysis for both flight and non-flight hardware. This work is in support of existing programs at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).

As an experienced structural analyst your expertise will provide valuable insight in the development, test, and certification of space systems hardware for a wide variety of NASA’s ongoing and future projects. You will provide technical oversight in the structural evaluation of Environmental Control Life Support Systems equipment and flight hardware. You will be expected to develop formal stress analysis packages for structural systems using strength of materials and finite element-based methods. Provide leadership and mentorship to fellow analysts while interfacing with program stakeholders and leaders. Job duties also include providing inputs to preliminary designs, development and delivery of reports and presentations to management, and collaboration with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware.

Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of NASGRO and experience conducting fracture classification and evaluation of spaceflight hardware components.
  • Knowledge of NASFLA and experience conducting fatigue evaluation of spaceflight hardware components.
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing analytical optimization software to refine designs to streamline required structural mass.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like Python, MATLAB, or VBA for automating tasks and developing custom analysis tools.
Essential Functions
Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
