Job summary

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Maintenance Operations Administration, Sign Fabrication and Installation Branch seeks a team-oriented Sign Installer. The incumbent will install, maintain, replace and remove traffic control signs on DC streets and highways, and work with a crew leader to ensure safe, compliant installations.

Outdoor work in all weather is routine, with adherence to MUTCD guidelines and use of measuring tools and basic equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, clean, install, maintain, replace, and remove a wide variety of traffic control and directional signs on District streets, highways, and structures.

• Attach prescribed signs to posts using brackets and bolts; cut U-posts and remove posts as needed; install additional signs when regulations change.
• Open Work Orders for pole installation and identify utility markings for safe installations.

Job Summary

This position is located in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Maintenance Operations Administration (MOA), Sign Fabrication and Installation Branch. The incumbent in this position will receive work assignments from a sign installation crew leader and will install, maintain, replace and remove a wide variety of traffic control, directional and information signs; flags and banners on the street poles, highway and highway structures in the District of Columbia. The work is performed as member of a team that is engaged in installation of various traffic control devices such as roadway signs. Periodic inspections are made by the incumbent to assess appearance, accuracy and adherence to established guidelines. Judgment must be exercised in proper placement of traffic control devices to assure a safe environment for pedestrians and motorists. The incumbent will use agency recommended smart technology to perform assigned duties.

Duties And Responsibilities

This incumbent receives work assignments from the sign installation leader or the Supervisory Engineering Tech and follows MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards. Incumbent is responsible for inspecting, cleaning, installing, maintaining, replacing, and removing a wide variety of traffic control and directional signs on District of Columbia streets, highways, and highway structures. Also installs, maintains, and repairs street name and directional signs on streetlight posts and poles at various intersections and other locations. Installs flags, posters, and related equipment required for parades, special events, and other public celebrations. The incumbent will perform a variety of tasks by installing U-posts and will secure cement patches or tampered. This position attaches prescribed signs to the posts using brackets, bolts and other required hard. This incumbent, if required, cuts U-posts to the appropriate size with a hacksaw when necessary and removing U-posts with post puller when traffic regulations change or installing additional signs on posts that are already installed. This position opens Ms. Utility Work Orders for Pole installation and identifies Ms. Utility markings for safe installation of poles.

Qualifications And Education

• A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
• Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
• Knowledge of MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices)

Licenses and Certifications

• The incumbent of this position must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Work Zone Safety Certified preferred.
• Sign and Pavement Marking Level I Certified preferred.
• Current participants in the Street Sign Installer Workforce Training Program are preferred.

Working Conditions/Environment

The incumbent works mostly outdoors in all types of weather. The Street Sign Installer works mostly outdoors where traffic hazards, risks of electrical shock, jackhammer noise, concrete chips and dust, sledgehammer jolts and vibration are conditions met in the daily operations. Work at heights, from ladders and trucks (lift platform or bucket). Handles heavy equipment and materials with risk of cuts from aluminum plates and stainless-steel banding. The likelihood of bruises, strains, sprains and trauma from metal chips, splinters or other injuries also exists.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is covered under collective bargaining union and subject to union dues thru payroll deduction.

Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability - Safety Sensitive. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to pre-employment checks (criminal background checks, consumer credit check, traffic record checks, if applicable) as a condition of employment, and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of your tenure.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an emergency employee position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operation, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Employees are required to work rotating shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Employees are considered emergency personnel and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
