Job summary

City of Westfield, Indiana seeks a General Laborer/Equipment Operator to assist with public works installation, maintenance, and repair projects. You will operate trucks, backhoes and related equipment, perform manual labor, and sometimes lead a crew under supervision. Work hours are 7:30 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential overtime, on-call duties, and occasional weekend work. CDL may be required or provided training.

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled work assisting with public works installation, maintenance, and repair projects, operating equipment, performing a variety of manual labor, and related work as apparent or assigned. Leading a crew if needed. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Street Superintendent and Foreman, Work hours for this position are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a 1 hour for lunch; maybe required to work odd hours and weekends, as needed. This position is required to be on-call for after-hours emergencies.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work requires distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines and operating motor vehicles or equipment; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of Indiana (ability to obtain).

Starting Wage

• Starting wage can be higher if you currently obtain a CDL. If you do not have a CDL, training will be provided.
