City of Loxley, AL is seeking an unskilled grounds maintenance worker to operate equipment, maintain city grounds, and perform tree care and routine upkeep of community spaces and rights-of-way. This 100% field position involves mowing, trimming, painting crosswalks, cleaning catch basins, and light repairs as needed.

From the street to city facilities, you will work in varying weather, lift up to 50 pounds, and follow simple instructions.

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

This is an unskilled position that involves operating equipment, landscaping, tree care and general upkeep of and maintenance of the city grounds, community centers, right-of-way's, and other areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs a variety of grounds maintenance work such as cultivating, pruning, spraying and trimming; cuts grass and weeds with hand tools and power mowers.
• Performs routine maintenance work such as filling equipment with gas, checking oil, sharpening mower blades and other related work.
• Assists in the maintenance and repair of building and equipment: inspects equipment for safety and makes repairs as needed.
• Operates hand striping machine to install crosswalks and parking stall lines: uses hand paint guns to paint curbs and lines: sets cones on ground to protect work areas; installs plastic pavement markers.
• Performs routine maintenance on new and existing traffic control devices such as installing, repairing and replacing traffic signs and sign posts.
• Pressure washes City facilities and sidewalks as directed.
• Mows City right-of-way's during the summer months.
• Fill potholes and resurface roads
• Haul and spread rock for road resurfacing
• Remove dirt, grass, leaves and trash from catch basins and ditches
• Check to ensure traffic signs are in place and in good condition; repair or replace street signs, stop signs and other traffic signs as needed
• Clear streets of limbs, brush and other debris after storms

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

• Some knowledge of power and hand tools used in work.
• Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
• Ability to understand and carry out simple oral instructions.
• Ability to operate light equipment and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position is 100% field time. Lifting demands could be 50 pounds +/- for a short duration. Walking, jumping and balance are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED
• If 21 years of age or older, applicant must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 2 years after the date of hiring. If less than 21 years of age, applicant must have a valid driver's license and, within 2 years after becoming 21 years of age, applicant must obtain a valid CDL.
