Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC), a Conservation Legacy program, is recruiting an AmeriCorps Stream Restoration: Felling & Rigging Crew Member. The position is based out of SECC's Chattanooga, Tennessee office, with camping and service in the Cherokee National Forest. The role is entry-level and involves physically demanding outdoor conservation and restoration work.
Service term: January 25, 2027 to April 30, 2027
AmeriCorps slot classification: 450 hours
Schedule: Crews work a 9-day hitch followed by 5 days off (Tuesday-Wednesday). Project days are 10 hours, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute unpaid lunch.
Southeast Conservation Corps empowers youth and adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility, and life skills through community service, hard work, and land stewardship across the Southeast. As an AmeriCorps program, SECC partners with land-management agencies, parks, municipalities, and nonprofits to host crews and individual placements. Its service opportunities benefit communities and landscapes.
Crew members will travel in a crew vehicle from Chattanooga to project sites in the Cherokee National Forest. In partnership with the forest, crews support fisheries biologists and hydrologists along the Citico Creek Watershed and other forest streams.
Crews consist of two crew leaders and five crew members. Crews camp in primitive front-country sites for the season; lodging may be provided on a case-by-case basis. This is a nonresidential program: housing, food, and transportation are not provided during off-hitch periods. Food and transportation are provided while in the field. SECC supplies tools, group camping equipment, and personal protective equipment. Members are expected to provide personal gear such as a day pack, water bottles, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, tent, and boots; a limited supply of loaner gear may be available.
Members receive orientation, including training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Crew members who attend the full two-week orientation will receive USFS-recognized chainsaw training, Wilderness First Aid, and rigging training and certifications.
The expected service period is January 25, 2027 to April 30, 2027, though exact schedules may vary. A half-hour lunch break does not count toward AmeriCorps service hours. Members may be asked to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events. Performance is evaluated based on completion of required hours, satisfactory completion of assignments, and other criteria communicated at the beginning of the service term. Reporting includes biweekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.

Physical requirements may include overnight travel, nontraditional work hours, movement across varied terrain, use of program-specific tools, and occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
