Job summary

City of Madison seeks a Public Information professional to lead comprehensive, proactive communications and brand-building efforts for the city. The role creates stories for media, manages social channels, and produces video, photo content and podcasts while coordinating with the Mayor, City Council and departments.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience in communications, marketing or public relations, plus strong writing and project management skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or related field.
• 5 years of related experience in communication, marketing, public relations or a related field.
• Combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above knowledge, skills and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Creates and disseminates news stories to the media and coordinates communications to residents and business community.
• Creates and maintains content for City’s website.
• Manages current social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube).
• Creates video content, photo content, and podcasts.
• Assists in the City’s branding and marketing efforts.
• Responds to citizens’ questions and comments.
• Serves as secondary media/public information contact during weather and emergency events.
• Prepares press releases for Mayor and City Council; arranges press conferences and responds to information requests.
• Facilitates flow of story ideas between the Mayor, City Council, and city departments.
• Assists other city departments with communication efforts.
• Attends special events on behalf of the Mayor’s Office.
• Performs other related duties as required.
