The Strategic Pharmacy Consultant position serves as a critical member of the Valued Pharmacy Services (VPS) account team. This role directly supports the broker(s) during the after-sales phase of the business. Once the account is acquired, this role assumes complete responsibility for maintaining an extremely positive relationship between VPS and our clients. Coordinates VPS services to assigned clients, while representing the clients’ interests with the providers, and serving as the clients’ liaison to providers and other internal and external partners. The Strategic Pharmacy Consultant also plays a major advisory role, by providing client consultation regarding Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) industry fundamentals, clinical opportunities, emerging trends, and best practices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities / Essential Functions:
  • Serve as the lead pharmacy consultant for assigned clients. Build strong relationships and develop a thorough understanding of each client's business priorities, population needs, and benefits strategy.
  • Advise clients on pharmacy benefit strategy, including plan design, formulary management, utilization management programs, clinical initiatives, emerging therapies, market trends, and PBM solutions.
  • Evaluate and recommend opportunities to improve clinical outcomes and reduce pharmacy spend through data analysis, program enhancements, contracting strategies, and industry best practices.
  • Review and interpret PBM contracts, financial reports, claims data, utilization trends, and benefit designs, identifying risks, performance gaps, savings opportunities, and areas for optimization.
  • Lead ongoing account management efforts, proactively addressing client concerns, escalating issues when appropriate, and resolving complex claims, billing, eligibility, clinical, and operational challenges.
  • Direct pharmacy benefit implementations, renewals, and plan changes, coordinating with internal teams, PBM partners, and clients to ensure seamless execution and delivery.
  • Develop and deliver client reporting, presentations, education sessions, and strategic recommendations to support informed decision-making at both employee and executive levels.
  • Represent VPS as a pharmacy benefits subject matter expert during client meetings, finalist presentations, industry events, conferences, and other business development opportunities.
  • Maintain expertise in the evolving PBM and healthcare landscape, monitoring industry developments, regulatory changes, market innovation, and emerging clinical trends.
  • Contribute to operational excellence through accurate documentation, reporting, process improvement initiatives, training development, and special projects supporting organizational growth.
Minimum Requirements for Education, Experience, and Certifications/Licenses:
  • Licensed pharmacist in any state. Preferably a PharmD.
  • Prefer 3+ years’ experience in clinical consulting and analysis of pharmaceutical products and clinical programs. Preferably with a PBM or Health System.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Deep expertise in employee benefits and pharmacy benefit management (PBM), including knowledge of the PBM marketplace, pharmacy benefit plan design, underwriting considerations, clinical program development, contract structures, and emerging industry trends.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to interpret complex contracts, financial reports, claims data, proposals, industry regulations, and clinical information to develop strategic recommendations and client solutions.
  • Exceptional client-facing communication and presentation skills, including the ability to explain complex pharmacy and benefits concepts, deliver consultative recommendations, respond effectively to client inquiries, and present to diverse audiences ranging from employees to executive leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, exercising sound judgment, critical thinking, initiative, and attention to detail while meeting deadlines with minimal direction.
  • Strong relationship management and teamwork skills, with the ability to build credibility and maintain productive partnerships with clients, brokers, carriers, PBM partners, vendors, and cross-functional internal teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with the ability to prepare reports, analyze data, and communicate professionally through written and verbal channels.
  • Commitment to compliance, confidentiality, and professional standards, including adherence to HIPAA requirements, applicable regulatory guidelines, and company policies regarding confidential information.
