Job summary

The Kresge Foundation in Detroit seeks a Communications Officer to promote the foundation’s mission and grantmaking through compelling, data-driven storytelling across arts & culture and environment programs. You will identify, write and package news stories, press releases and videos while advising program teams on communications plans and priorities.

The role requires five years of professional writing or communications experience, AP style mastery, and ability to translate complex information

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related liberal arts field.
A minimum of five years of progressive experience working as a professional writer or communications professional.
Experience in either the arts & culture (Creative Placemaking) or environment (climate resiliency in cities) preferred.
Demonstrates ownership of responsibilities with some management oversight.
Strong commitment to the foundation’s vision, values, and equity in daily interactions.
Demonstrated news judgment, writing, researching and interviewing skills.
Ability to translate complicated technical information to sector and mainstream audiences with clear prose.
Experience with content-management systems, social media, search engine optimization, and Web-based technology.
Thorough knowledge of Associated Press style.
Ability to juggle tasks and work independently in a dynamic team.
Interest in keeping up with evolving communications technology.
Experience with Web and print publishing desirable.
Experience designing, scripting, developing content and producing video, multimedia, Web and audio products desirable.

Responsibilities

Identifies, researches and writes news stories, press releases, case studies and other materials to promote understanding of the Foundation’s mission, grantmaking and investing through data-driven storytelling across all media.
Develops and executes communication plans to advance program priorities.
Writes columns and opinion pieces for assigned program teams as needed.
Conceptualizes and produces video, multimedia, web and audio content.
Creates and edits content for speeches and presentations ensuring alignment with the foundation’s messages.
Maintains and updates Foundation website content.
Leverages traditional and digital tools to maximize audience reach.
Builds and trains program teams on social media presence.
Assists grantees with their communications needs; reviews and edits materials.
Stays current with local, regional and national media to pitch stories.
