Job summary

South Dakota State University is seeking a Research Communications Coordinator to elevate the university’s research achievements through strategic storytelling. This role reports to University Marketing and Communications and collaborates with researchers and university leadership to promote work to local, regional, and national audiences.

The position is located in Brookings, SD, full-time for 12 months with benefits and sponsorship not available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, public relations, communications, English, marketing or related field
• At least three years of strategic/broadcast communications experience in a fast-paced setting
• Exceptional communication and organizational skills
• Knowledge of Associated Press style
• Ability to present research results in written form for media
• Ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines and budgets
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire

Responsibilities

• Develop a cohesive research communications and marketing strategy aligned with university objectives.
• Work with researchers and leaders to promote work to media and public.
• Produce written content and assist in video, graphics, and photos for multiple platforms.
• Lead the annual research report and monthly newsletters.
• Highlight researchers and their work through news releases and pitched stories.
• Monitor breaking news and pitch SDSU experts to media.
• Oversee the experts list on sdstate.edu and recruit researchers for inclusion.
• Contribute to university magazines, newsletters, and other deadline-driven writing projects.
