Job description

Summary

Under the direction of the Regional Director, the store manager is responsible for maintaining the assigned store. Major duties include supervision of inventory and stock rotations, promoting merchandise, personnel administration, loss prevention, operational procedures, revenue generation, and expense budget control.

Essential Functions/Duties
  • Generate revenue and control the expense budget for the store, staying within defined guidelines including payroll expenses.
  • Transport cash funds to and from the bank.
  • Supervise receipt of inventory, stock rotations, color rotations, scheduled markdowns, and transfer of stock in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Promote merchandise sales and create in‑store displays.
  • Monitor store premises and ensure facilities and grounds are kept clean, neat, and safe.
  • Open and close the store as required.
  • Handle employee and customer inquiries professionally.
  • Follow procedures for managing potential disturbances, including calming loud customers, evicting disorderly customers, and handling lost children.
  • Plan and maintain the organization of store personnel; prepare work schedules and arrange for replacement of absent employees.
  • Evaluate employee performance and recommend disciplinary actions, including terminations.
  • Ensure staff compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Public Protection procedures.
  • Instill proper safety and security attitudes in employees and trainees; protect customers and ensure all operations comply with safety programs.
  • Demonstrate good customer service skills.
  • Communicate effectively with other organizational departments.
  • Maintain a well‑groomed appearance and adhere to the business dress code, including a name badge.
Additional Functions/Duties
  • Assist other stores as directed by the Regional Director.
  • Handle store receipts according to prescribed procedures and good security practices.
  • Assist in loss prevention investigations when necessary, keeping information confidential.
  • Complete reports including schedules, meetings, safety, payroll, and store records.
  • React calmly to and respond to emergency situations.
  • Respond to alarm calls as needed; maintain telephone accessibility.
  • Coordinate and conduct monthly safety drills or serve as Safety Captain.
  • Complete a monthly maintenance inspection checklist.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Director.
Qualifications/Competencies
  • Adherence to the organization’s Core Principles.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Knowledge of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Public Protection procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating a Point of Sale (POS) system.
  • Ability to react calmly in emergency situations.
  • Skill in conducting phone and face‑to‑face interviews.
  • Skill in maintaining inventory, sales, and store records.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and mentor store personnel and community workers.
Education and/or Experience

High school education or equivalent is required. A college education or five years of retail management experience is preferred. Previous retail or handling experience is preferred. Experience working with people who have disabilities and/or prior Goodwill experience is a plus.

Math Ability

Level 3: Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Application of basic algebra and geometry concepts.

Computer Skills

Beginner knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is required. Experience utilizing a POS system is necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has supervisory responsibilities including supervision of subordinate supervisors.

Purchasing Authority

Purchasing Authority Level – Team Leaders and Retail Operations Assistants.

  • Must have reliable transportation.

Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Vision abilities required: close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to bend, reach, and stand for extensive periods of time.
  • Able to perform tasks requiring repetitive motion such as tagging or hanging clothes. Manual dexterity is required.
  • Perform work both outside and inside; exposure to weather conditions such as dust, dirt, rain, and noise.
  • Work environment noise level is usually loud (e.g., metal can manufacturing department, large earth‑moving equipment).
Language Ability

Level 3: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups.
