Job summary

The role requires merchandising expertise, market knowledge, and strong leadership to drive profitability and customer satisfaction.

The Store Manager will lead store teams, manage inventory and safety, recruit and train staff, and align processes with corporate directives.

Job description

Summary

Store Managers are responsible for the complete day-to-day operation of the store. They maximize store sales and profitability, minimize expenses, and ensure that the store is optimally stocked and merchandised. The Store Manager instills CNRG’s culture and values in all employees. They conduct themselves with personal integrity and ensure the store operates according to CNRG’s policies and procedures. The Manager must have expertise in merchandising and operational aspects, and be knowledgeable of local market dynamics, customer base, seasonality, and competition. The Store Manager is a role model, a leader, a problem solver, a calculated risk-taker, and manages time to achieve budget results.

Customer Service and Operational Duties
  • Perform all sales counter, point-of-sale (register), and store administrative functions as required.
  • Lead by example in providing exceptional customer service personally.
  • Train and motivate the sales team to deliver outstanding customer experiences.
  • Cultivate very satisfied customers in line with CNRG’s operating philosophy and profit objectives.
  • Respond immediately to customer complaints and resolve them promptly.
  • Maintain the retail sales floor with proper merchandising using corporate directives such as key assortments, plan‑ograms, seasonal items, promotional displays, pricing updates, and end‑caps.
  • Organize personnel and internal processes to ensure timely and complete customer deliveries.
  • Manage contractor salesmen, encouraging them to prospect for new sales while supporting existing customers.
Budgets & Payroll
  • Drive store sales and profit to exceed budget targets.
  • Understand financial drivers and remain accountable for results.
  • Control costs and schedule payroll in alignment with CNRG objectives for labor productivity and customer service.
Inventory Control
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of all inventory movement to detect and prevent shrinkage.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels that meet customer needs while aligning with investment goals.
  • Keep inventory clean and orderly per company policy and business best practices.
  • Oversee warehouse and yard personnel to properly receive and store merchandise.
Safety & Loss Prevention
  • Create a safety‑first environment and enforce safe work practices.
  • Apply store security measures and advise employees on loss prevention methods.
  • Ensure equipment (ladders, forklifts, trucks) is in good condition and safe.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings with store associates.
  • Protect inventory against loss and theft.
Employee Relations
  • Recruit, select, and train key personnel.
  • Foster a team environment throughout the store.
  • Provide associates access to the Resource Center for job support.
  • Publish work schedules timely and record hours accurately.
  • Create an enjoyable work environment encouraging self‑motivation and productivity.
  • Maintain an open‑door policy for reporting issues and sharing ideas.
Communication
  • Maintain compliance with company policy and report unusual occurrences promptly.
  • Check email regularly for communications from management and customers; respond in a timely manner.
  • Lead monthly store meetings to discuss performance, goals, promotions, events, and safety.
  • Utilize the Resource Center for important information, forms, and policies.
  • Report problems, obstacles, and improvement ideas to supervisors.
Coaching & Training
  • Provide a motivating work environment that supports self‑motivation and high productivity.
  • Set goals and provide immediate feedback, implementing corrective measures when necessary.
  • Supervise and mentor all store and yard employees, developing assistants for future promotion.
  • Direct associates to training opportunities via the Resource Center.
Qualifications

Must demonstrate excellent leadership and problem‑solving skills, operate with limited supervision, and possess strong communication and organizational abilities. Must be detail‑oriented, handle multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment, and work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Must have mathematical and general business skills to interpret and apply data in merchandising and operations. Must be knowledgeable of retail building materials, home improvement and hardware products, and general retail operations. Preferred previous retail experience. Must have physical strength to lift merchandise up to 100 pounds, reach items on shelves, and climb ladders.
