The position requires the ability to operate high pressure boilers, turbine generator, and auxiliary equipment. All employees are responsible for providing a comfortable environment for other Colby College residents and staff. This position reports to the Engineer in charge of the Central Steam Plant.QUALIFICATIONS:* High school diploma or equivalent required.* A Maine State High Pressure Boiler Operators license required.* Mechanical ability to operate, maintain, and service of the mechanical equipment and systems used in high pressure steam plants.* Ability to operate and maintain Biomass and Natural Gas Boilers and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* Perform all work in a prompt, neat, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning and thoughtfulness.* Maintain tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a neat and clean condition.* Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community.* To notify and / or obtain advice from the Engineer in Charge or call for assistance as may be appropriate in any situation.* Test condition of the boiler water as directed.* Read and record steam plant data hourly.* Monitor, record, and control opacity emissions in accordance with Colby directives and the State of Maine DEP and federal regulations.* Operate, change, and clean burners.* Operate soot blowers.* Perform routine preventive maintenance and other repairs as directed.* Perform all other task, and duties as directed by the Engineer in ChargePHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:General indoor and outdoor campus environment. Duties require that employees interact with students, faculty and staff.PHYSICAL EFFORT:Position involves some sitting, though frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and considerable lifting is often required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand wrist motion is also necessary.
