Job summary

Mayo Clinic seeks a Sterile Processing Technician to support the operating room team by preparing and delivering instruments for surgical procedures. The role cleans, packages, and processes equipment while maintaining core inventory. You will handle sterilization tracking software and run autoclaves and related devices.

Preferred candidates have CRCST certification within 18 months, plus experience or a related certificate in Central Service. Strong communication and adaptability are essential.

Qualifications

  • HSPA certification as Central Processing Technician (CRCST) within 18 months of hire.
  • Two years of experience handling/sterilizing surgical/medical/dental instruments or a vocational Central Service Technician/Patient Care Assistant cert in last four years.
  • Alternatively, two years as Central Service Technician/Patient Care Assistant in an acute care setting within last five years.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver medical/surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment for procedures under supervision.
  • Clean, package, and process surgical equipment and instrumentation; maintain inventory and storage in the core.
  • Operate and troubleshoot power equipment to process instruments (autoclaves, washer disinfector, ultrasonic cleaners).
  • Manage multiple computer applications to assist with sterilization tracking and processes.

Responsibilities

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for performing delegated activities to support the operating room team in the care of the surgical patient. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, Core Charge RN, and Core Supervisor, the Sterile Processing Technician prepares and delivers medical/surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures. The Sterile Processing Technician cleans, packages, and processes surgical equipment and instrumentation, as well as maintains inventory and storage of supplies in the core. The Sterile Processing Technician manages multiple computer applications to assist with sterilization tracking and processes. Responsible to operate and troubleshoot power equipment to process instruments (i.e. autoclaves, washer disinfector, ultrasonic cleaners).

Qualifications

Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certification as a Central Processing Technician (CRCST) within 18 months of hire. Must be 18 years of age prior to start date.Prefer two years of experience in the handling and sterilization processing of surgical/medical/dental instrumentation within the past four years, or vocational certificate as Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant within the last two years. Alternatively, at least two years of experience as a Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant in an acute care setting within the last five years. Prefer knowledge of medical terminology. Adapts to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting. Proven ability to communicate with a variety of people in a direct, empathetic, and articulate manner. Demonstrated patient-centered and customer focused communication skills. Frequent lifting/carrying of 25 pounds or more, with occasional work above shoulder level.
