Job summary

Hughston Surgical Center is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to receive, reprocess, and distribute surgical instruments and equipment under the direction of HSC management. The role includes maintaining equipment, preparing for procedures, and ensuring compliance with policies and PPE requirements.

Qualified candidates will have at least 1 year of disinfection/sterilization experience and graduate from an approved Central Sterilization Technician Program.

Qualifications

  • 1 year experience in disinfection/sterilization within medical field.
  • Graduate from an approved Central Sterilization Technician Program.
  • Understanding of sterilization techniques and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgery staff with case carts, supplies, equipment and trays; prioritize and deliver timely.
  • Retrieve soiled equipment, decontaminate and prepare for re-issue.
  • Prepare instrument trays, pack sterile items, and follow PPE protocols to protect items and staff.
  • Verify instrumentation from washer/decontaminator is clean and ready for use.
  • Reassemble instruments disassembled for decontamination and ensure mechanics work smoothly.
  • Assemble standard and complex instrumentation sets for next day’s schedule and document loads, dates and logs.
  • Maintain routine equipment maintenance and terminal cleaning; participate in department housekeeping.
  • Support orientation of new employees and assist with supply management for trays and sterile supplies.

POSITION GOAL

Under the direction of HSC management, the Sterile Processing Technician receives, reprocesses and distributes surgical instruments and equipment, maintains associated equipment and prepares for surgical procedures. Performs other unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with HSC policies, procedures and protocols.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists surgery staff requests for surgical case carts, supplies, equipment and trays. Prioritizes appropriately and delivers in a timely manner.

Retrieves soiled equipment, decontaminates and prepares for re-issue.

Accurately prepares instrument trays and packs, sterilizes' protects items and self by handling equipment properly to prevent damage and loss. Follows PPE protocols.

Demonstrates knowledge of care and cleaning of lumens.

Prior to sterilization, completes component check of each instrument to verify completeness and proper function of each instrument.

Identifies that instrumentation coming from the washer decontaminator has been completely cleaned.

Demonstrates the ability to reassemble any instrument disassembled for decontamination.

Verifies all instrument mechanics are working smoothly. Prioritizes and assembles standard and complex surgical instrumentation sets for the next day’s surgical schedule.

Confirms that conditions for sterilization have been met.

Documents what type and number of items in each load, sterilization date, and equipment log.

Performs routine equipment maintenance and terminal cleaning.

Demonstrates responsibility for own competency, mandatory programs and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal date up to date.

Participates in the orientation of new employees

Supportive Responsibilities:

Participates in the management of supplies for trays contain implants and sterile department supplies.

Documents any missing instruments on the outside of each instrument tray. Consults with RN Manager and Director.

Works as a member of the total Surgical Services team to foster interdepartmental success.

Performs other related work as requested.

Actively participates in the Department’s housekeeping responsibilities and duties

Experience:

Required:

One (1) year experience in disinfection/sterilization and utilizing technical sterilization equipment involving multiple parts within the medical field.

Education:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Graduate from an approved Central Sterilization Technician Program.

Special Qualifications:

Required:

Understanding of sterilization techniques.

Knowledge of different sterilization methods and equipment.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
