Job summary

Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston seeks a Sterile Processing Technician to provide sterilized surgical instruments and supplies to the operating room and hospital areas. May act as lead technician on shift.

This role emphasizes adherence to Standard Precautions, Event-Related Sterility, and ongoing training and mentorship of staff.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Licenses/Certifications: CBSPD or IAHCSMM required; CIS or CSIS preferred.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Minimum of two (2) years of sterilization experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technician/charge role on shift as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of Sterile Processing rules, procedures, and processes.
  • Handle and care for instruments/equipment; select cleaning agents; ensure function and assembly per count sheet.
  • Identify, document, and report equipment/tools needing repair and ensure maintenance.
  • Organize, prepare, assemble and sterilize instruments and supplies per standards.
  • Peel-pack, wrap, and inspect instruments for use and cleanliness.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment safely.
  • Maintain records of equipment and supplies and monitor quality and infection control standards.
  • Communicate delays or problems with Operating Room and other areas.
  • Occasionally take on complex assignments to expand knowledge.
  • Provide safe care and align with Memorial Hermann policies within budget and quality targets.
  • Promote growth; serve as preceptor/mentor to staff.
  • Demonstrate compassionate, personalized care for our community.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Position responsible for providing sterilized surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to the operating room as well as other areas of the hospital. May function as the lead/charge person for the shift, as needed. Assists in the supervision and training of other personnel utilizing principles of Standard Precautions and Event‑Related Sterility.

Responsibilities
  • May function as lead technician/charge person on the shift as needed.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of Sterile Processing department rules, procedures, and processes.
  • Accurately handle and care for instruments/equipment, selecting appropriate cleaning agents, lubricants, and ensuring inspection for function, identification, and assembly according to count sheet.
  • Identify, document, and report equipment and tools in need of repair and ensure maintenance is completed.
  • Organize, prepare, assemble, and sterilize instruments, equipment and supplies according to hospital/medical facility standards of sterilization.
  • Correctly peel‑pack supplies/instruments, wrap instruments for sterilization, and inspect each instrument for use, function, completeness, and cleanliness.
  • Load, monitor, operate, and maintain different types of cleaning and sterilization equipment and machinery accurately and safely.
  • Maintain records of all equipment and supplies, including ordering as needed, and monitor quality control and infection control standards.
  • Communicate delays, supply, instrumentation, and equipment problems, substitutions involving Operating Room and other areas.
  • Accept more complex assignments regularly to increase knowledge base.
  • Ensure safe care to patients, staff, and visitors; adhere to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications, time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
  • Promote individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; support department‑based goals that contribute to organizational success; serve as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Certified by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) required. Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Surgical Instrument Specialist Certification (CSIS) preferred.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience involving sterilization of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver supplies and equipment in conjunction with others to perform job functions.
