Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification in Sterile Processing (CRCST/CSPDT) due within 18 months of employment.
• Knowledge of surgical instruments, hospital equipment, and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and decontaminates instruments, trays, supplies, and equipment according to procedures.
• Operates sterilization and decontamination equipment (washers, sonic cleaners, sterilizers).
• Assembles instrument trays and peel packs with proper identification and labeling.
• Monitors and documents sterilization loads and testing results.
• Identifies and reports defective or unsafe instruments to leadership.
• Stocks sterile storage areas and maintains inventory levels.
• Prepares and delivers case carts based on surgical schedules and cards.
• Transports clean and soiled equipment between Sterile Processing and procedural areas.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of all work areas and equipment.
• Participates in quality improvement activities and departmental training.
• Assists in training and onboarding of new staff.
• Adheres to safety, infection control, and confidentiality standards.

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine as a Sterile Processing Technician II in the Central Sterile Processing Department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

The Sterile Processing Technician II will be responsible for preparing OR surgical case carts and performing decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of reprocessable supplies, equipment, and surgical instruments in compliance with hospital standards. This role requires knowledge of all sterilization modalities, monitoring of sterilization processes, and use of instrument tracking systems. Staff are expected to rotate across all processing areas and may be required to work weekends and holidays.

Essential Job Functions

• Cleans and decontaminates instruments, trays, supplies, and equipment according to established procedures
• Operates sterilization and decontamination equipment, including washers, sonic cleaners, and sterilizers
• Assembles instrument trays and peel packs with proper identification, wrapping, labeling, and sterilization method
• Monitors and documents sterilization loads, including biological and chemical testing results
• Identifies and removes defective or unsafe instruments and reports issues to leadership
• Stocks sterile storage areas and maintains appropriate inventory levels
• Prepares and delivers case carts based on surgical schedules and preference cards
• Transports clean and soiled equipment between Sterile Processing and procedural areas
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of all work areas and equipment
• Participates in quality improvement activities and required departmental training
• Assists in training and onboarding of new staff

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Sterile Processing Certification (CRCST or CSPDT) required within 18 months of employment
• Knowledge of surgical instruments, hospital equipment, and medical terminology
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to respond effectively to urgent and emergency supply needs
• Ability to lift and move items over 30 lbs and stand for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of experience in Central Sterile Processing
• Previous hospital-based sterile processing experience
• Basic computer skills and experience with instrument tracking systems
