Job summary

Washington University in St. Louis in Creve Coeur, MO, seeks a Sterile Processing Technician to lead and oversee sterile processing in ambulatory care.

You will decontaminate, prepare, sterilize, and distribute instrumentation; maintain records and support high-level disinfection procedures. Responsibilities include supervising staff, coordinating with leadership, and ensuring space and equipment readiness.

  • Maintains records of sterile processing, inventory, and usage; supports infection prevention compliance.
  • Collaborates with leadership to plan and oversee sterile processing operations; coordinates duties and suggests improvements.
  • Maintains space, equipment, and supplies; ensures compliance with EH&S inspections.
  • Trains others in proper processing and handling of instruments and scopes.

Position Summary

This position leads and oversees the work of sterile processing in the clinical ambulatory care setting. Performs a variety of sterile processing functions, which include the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of instrumentation to the clinical exam and procedure rooms. Required to maintain and control both sterile and non-sterile supplies and identifies and remediates equipment and process failures and hazards while maintaining appropriate and complete records. Supports high level disinfection procedures. Serves as primary resource for others and works as a high functioning member of a clinical team.

Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Disassembles, inspects, cleans, tests functionality and assembles instrumentation and power equipment according to the instruction for use and industry standards. Follows proper techniques and procedures to ensure the integrity of the sterilization process.
  • Utilizes and troubleshoots steam and low temperature sterilizers. Promptly notifying supervisor of priority needs, malfunctions or needed repairs.
  • Maintains proper records/documentation of sterile processing, inventory, usage, and damage reports, all essential for infection prevention compliance. Manages EH&S inspections of sterile processes.
  • Collaborates with leadership in the planning, operation, and training for the sterile processing function. Oversees, coordinates and assigns duties. Makes recommendations for improvement in the quality of service
  • Coordinates the maintenance of space, equipment, and supplies.
  • Trains others in the proper processing and handling of instruments and scopes.

Salary Range

$19.93 - $29.93 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
