Job summary

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, seeks a Sterile Processing Technician to join the Central Sterile Processing Department. You will ensure safe, compliant processing of instruments and support the operating room team in delivering high-quality perioperative care.

Responsibilities include decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and inventory management, with certification in HSPA or CBSPD preferred and two years of instrument processing experience. This is a full-time role based in Jacksonville.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Graduate of an accredited sterile processing program and eligible to sit for certification (HSPA or CBSPD) with two years of instrument processing experience.

Responsibilities

• Receives direction from CSPD Leadership and collaborates with the OR team and allied health staff.
• Perform advanced, complex, multi-step sterilization and processing to support the operating room and procedural areas.
• Clean, package and re-process reusable surgical instruments, instrumentation and scopes per IFU.
• Maintain inventory and storage of processed supplies.
• Support sterile core activities and ensure compliance with best practices and standards (Joint Commission, AAMI, HIPAA, etc.).
• Adhere to aseptic technique and ensure proper packaging, sterility indicators, and lot stickers on instrument sets.

Responsibilities

Receives direction from the Central Sterile Processing Department (CSPD) Leadership Team including Team Leaders, Educator, Supervisors, and Manager. Works in collaboration with the operating room team and/or other allied health staff.

Sterile processing technicians are vital to safe and efficient care delivery in the perioperative environment and are responsible for ensuring all surgical instruments are safe for use.

• Responsible for performing advanced, complex, multistep processes and delegated activities to support the operating room team in the care of the surgical patient and various procedural areas within the hospital.
• Cleaning, packaging and re-processing of re-usable surgical equipment, instrumentation and scopes; per manufacturer's guidelines.
• Maintaining inventory and storage of processed supplies.
• Meeting the needs of the surgical team through support of activities in the sterile core.
• Responsibilities include: decontamination, assembly, sterilization, quality assurance testing, and storage.
• Central Service technicians work in compliance with best practices and standards established by: The Joint Commission, AAMI, HSPA, HSPA, AORN, OSHA, DOC, WHO, FDA, EPA, and HIPAA.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. A minimum of two years of instrumentation experience OR graduation from an accredited and/or hospital approved sterile processing program and eligible to sit for certification through HSPA or CBSPD with two years of instrument processing experience.

Licensure/Certification Required

Certification through HSPA or CBSPD is required within one year of hire and maintained thereafter.

Additional Experience and/or Qualifications: (Has Achieved Competency in the Following Areas, Job Knowledge and Additional Considerations):

Knowledge of specific sterilization modalities and complex advanced processing systems including:

1-Operates complex sterilization equipment, selects the correct method of sterilization based upon manufacturers’ instructions for use (IFU) i.e. gravity displacement, dynamic air-removal, low temperature hydrogen peroxide gas plasma, DSD, CER, Pass Through Medivator Advantage, Astra Tee, GUS, Scope Buddy Plus, Aqua Sink, process and efficacy testing, and cutting edge specialty trial and multi service instrumentation and trays is required. Knowledge of High, Low and Intermediate disinfection levels is required. Progressive computer knowledge for advanced computerized instrument tracking systems, sterilization, assembly case information, inventory management and individual productivity data is required. Knowledge of progressive computer technology, human anatomy, surgical terminology, infection control, microbiology, and safety and risk control is required. Proven interpersonal skills (including ability to receive and give constructive feedback), effective and concise verbal and written communication skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships is preferred.

2-Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set. Aware of aseptic technique and proper wrapping of instrument trays to allow the end user to open product in an aseptic manner and produces a logically arranges package within the weight limits compliant with IFU for assured sterilization. Ensures appropriate sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages. Basic knowledge of error messages received from processing equipment and complete training to evaluate function and perform interventions to maintain efficient processing of trays.
