Job summary

Baptist Health Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, AL, invites a Sterile Processing Tech II to join our full-time day shift. You will oversee the sterilization workflow from cleaning to distribution of instrument trays for surgical cases, following surgeon preferences and pick lists.

The role requires a high school diploma and SPD readiness certification or national certification; you will mentor new staff, ensure infection control standards, and support patient safety in a fast-paced operating

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • SPD Readiness Course completion or national certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in sterile processing or completion of SPD Readiness Course.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains high professional and ethical standards in the sterilization process.
  • Applies microbiology and infection control principles to process instrumentation and equipment.
  • Has knowledge of surgical instrumentation functions within the operating room.
  • Responsible for sterilizing all instrumentation and supplies requested by customer departments.
  • Keeps daily records and performs monitoring of chemical, mechanical, and biological aspects of sterilization.

Sterile Processing Tech II Full-Time Days


Position Summary


Demonstrates, through clinical practice, knowledge, and a clear understanding of the entire sterilization process, from cleaning and decontamination through packaging, sterilization, and distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts according to pick lists or surgeon's preference cards.


Responsibilities

Essential Functions



  • Has high professional and ethical standards that are employed in making critical decisions in every aspect of the sterilization process.

  • Uses knowledge of microbiology and infection control in determining the best method of processing ever changing, highly technical patient care instrumentation and equipment.

  • Has advanced knowledge of the function of surgical instrumentation during patient care in the operating room suite in at least one surgical specialty.

  • Proficient in the decontamination of surgical instrumentation as well as a wide variety of patient equipment.

  • Responsible for the sterilization of all instrumentation, equipment and supplies that are requested from customer departments.

  • Responsible for daily record keeping and chemical, mechanical, & biological monitoring relative to sterilization processes.

  • Participates in the preceptorship and orientation of new team members.

  • Participates in the distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the requirements of the surgery schedule, pick lists and surgeon’s preference cards.

  • Demonstrates through practice a clear understanding of the instrumentation utilized during surgical procedures.

  • Consults with and works directly with the SPD Supervisor, and/or the SPD Operations Specialist, regarding unit activities.

  • Works as the patient’s advocate regarding the most correct and safest form of sterilization for all patient use instrumentation and equipment.

  • Assures that through specific infection control procedures a safe environment is maintained.

  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

  • Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures.


Other Related Functions



  • Participates in all unit quality control activities. He or she must demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of their role to patient care.

  • Responsible for helping to maintain a safe environment for fellow team members as well as patients.

  • Completes special projects, without supervision, as assigned by departmental leadership.

  • Works independently in all areas. He or she participates in all unit quality control activities and makes recommendations for process improvement activities.


Qualifications

Education/Training



  • High school graduate or equivalent.


Licensure/Certification



  • Within the First year in 2132 job code: Completion status in the SPD Readiness Course; or Nationally certified through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).


Experience



  • Minimum of One (1) year of experience in sterile processing, or a minimum of nine (9) months with certification or completion of SPD Readiness Course.
