Job summary

Baptist Health Shelby Hospital in Alabaster, AL is seeking a Sterile Processing Tech II for PRN evenings to join our fast-paced SPD team. You will handle cleaning, decontamination, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts across multiple departments.

This role requires knowledge of infection control, instrumentation, and adherence to quality control standards. You will work under the SPD Supervisor and contribute to safe patient care and outcomes.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Minimum of One (1) year of experience in sterile processing, or a minimum of nine (9) months with certification or completion of SPD Readiness Course.
• Within the First year in 2132 job code: Completion status in the SPD Readiness Course; or Nationally certified through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Responsibilities

• Maintain high professional and ethical standards in all sterilization decisions.
• Apply microbiology and infection control knowledge to processing of instrumentation and equipment.
• Demonstrate understanding of surgical instrumentation in at least one specialty.
• Perform decontamination of instruments and equipment.
• Sterilize instrumentation, equipment, and supplies per requests from customer departments.
• Maintain daily records and monitor chemical, mechanical, and biological indicators.
• Assist in training new team members and orientation.
• Distribute instrument trays per surgery schedule and surgeon’s preference.
• Collaborate with SPD Supervisor/Operations Specialist on unit activities.
• Advocate for patient safety in sterilization methods and environments.
• Ensure a safe environment for staff and patients; comply with Baptist Health policies.
• Participate in unit quality control activities and suggest process improvements.
