Job summary

University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS seeks a Sterile Processing Tech II to inspect, assemble, package and sterilize instrument sets for the OR and other departments. You will operate sterilizers, prepare sterile items and maintain instrument readiness to ensure safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED with 1 year sterile processing experience.
  • Must hold CSPDT certification and related CSP credentials.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
  • Ability to precept and mentor new staff.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and ensure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, integrity, and preparation of instruments for distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection control, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and operate sterilization equipment and washers while documenting quality controls.
  • Collaborate to maintain inventory of clean and sterilized instruments according to standards.
  • Follow infection prevention policies and guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Demonstrate core standards of exceptional customer service.
  • Serve as preceptor and mentor to new employees.

Job Title

Sterile Processing Tech II

Job Summary

Inspects, assembles, packages and sterilizes surgical instrument sets, procedural trays, and mechanical equipment for the operating room and ancillary departments. Operates sterilizers, prepares and dispenses sterile items, performs inspection, cleaning, and general servicing of instruments for the OR, internal hospital departments and off‑site agencies to ensure instruments operate properly prior to issuance. Maintains accuracy of 98% or higher and productivity of 90% or higher. Able to precept and mentor new employees and facilitate interactions between the SPD and OR.

Responsibilities
  • Insure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, integrity, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment for distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, infection control practices, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and files, and operate sterilization equipment and washers while documenting quality and safety controls.
  • Collaborate to maintain inventory of clean and sterilized surgical instruments in accordance with UMMC and regulatory standards.
  • Follow infection prevention policies, AORN recommendations, OSHA and AAMI guidelines to assure a safe work environment.
  • Demonstrate core standards of exceptional customer service.
  • Serve as preceptor and mentor to new employees.
Qualifications

Education & Experience: High school diploma/GED and 1 year of sterile processing or surgical technology experience.

  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)
  • Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS)
  • Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER)
  • Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM)
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS)
  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER)
  • Certified Healthcare Leadership (CHL)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy; preceptor skills and experience in mentoring and coaching; general knowledge of instrumentation function and maintenance; basic computer skills; basic reading and writing skills.
