Job summary

Rochester Regional Health’s Sterile Processing department seeks a dedicated central service technician to process, decontaminate, and distribute sterile goods across the hospital and affiliates.

Responsibilities include maintaining supplies, following procedures, and transporting medications from crash carts to the pharmacy. Requires CRCST or CST or grandfathering with appropriate certification timelines.

Qualifications

• Successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam and holds and maintains one of the following credentials: CRCST or CST.
• Grandfathering Clause: evidence of employment as a Central Service Technician in a health care facility for a cumulative period between 1/1/2011-1/1/2015.

Responsibilities

• Process and supply sterile goods and equipment to all hospital areas, including decontamination, gleanning, packing, sterilizing, storing, and distribution.
• Maintain appropriate supplies used in the sterilization process.
• Report any supply not readily available to appropriate parties for replenishment.
• Distribute needed supplies and equipment throughout the hospital and affiliates as ordered.
• Follow all department policies and procedures when distributing supplies and equipment.
• Keep assigned areas clean, organized, and fully stocked with necessary supplies.
• Transport medications from crash cart to pharmacy.

SCHEDULE: Day/Evening - 1:00 PM-9:00 PM

ON-CALL: Required every 6th weekend - 7:00 AM-3:00 PM

Provides hospital and affiliated facilities with processed material and equipment, ensuring a quality product at an effective cost for patient care by executing established procedures for decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for processing and supplying sterile goods and equipment to all areas within the hospital, including decontamination, gleaning, packing, sterilizing, storing, and distribution.
• Maintains appropriate supplies used in the process of sterilizing items for use in the hospital and any other institution or organization deemed appropriate by the administrative staff.
• Reports any supply not readily available to appropriate parties for replenishment.
• Distributes needed supplies and equipment throughout the hospital and affiliates as ordered.
• Follows all department policies and procedures when distributing supplies and equipment.
• Keeps assigned areas clean, organized, and fully stocked with necessary supplies.
• Collects and cleans soiled equipment and machines, and maintains clean carts and shelves on floors, utilizing appropriate protective equipment and attire.
• Transport medications from crash cart to pharmacy.

Required Qualifications

Successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam and holds and maintains one of the following credentials:

• Certified Registered Central Service Technician credential
• Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician credential

• Grandfathering Clause: Must provide evidence of employment or contract services as a Central Service Technician in a health care facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring between 1/1/2011-1/1/2015.

Required License/Certification

• Central Service Technician certification required within 18 months of hire if does not meet grandfathering requirements.
• Sterile Processing certification required within 18 months after employment if Hard to Fill clause is utilized
• Employees with Provisional Certification from IAHCSMM must obtain complete certification within 6 months from hire.

Physical Requirements

Heavy - This category includes physically intensive work such as lifting heavy materials (up to 100 lbs.), climbing ladders, crawling into tight spaces, and working on uneven, slippery, or elevated surfaces. Employees must demonstrate strong motor coordination, balance, and spatial awareness to safely operate tools and equipment. High visual and auditory alertness is required, especially in areas with moving machinery. Emotional demands are moderate, focusing on hazard recognition, task accuracy, and adherence to safety standards. Environmental exposures may include extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, loud noise, and mechanical hazards. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and periodic physical examinations are often required.
