Job summary

Mass General Brigham's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is seeking a Central Sterile Technician to perform sterile processing activities, reprocess specialty instrumentation, and support quality, productivity, and patient care goals. Shift 12:00pm to 8:30pm, onsite at 800 Huntington Avenue, Boston.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent; CRCST or CSPDT certification required; 1–2 years of central sterile experience preferred.

  • Operates sterile processing equipment, including washers, sterilizers, and related technologies.
  • Maintains inventory of sterile supplies and processing consumables.

Job Summary

Shift 12:00pm to 8:30pm

Summary: Responsible for independently performing sterile processing activities, including the reprocessing of specialty instrumentation and equipment. Applies advanced knowledge of sterile processing practices, manufacturer instructions for use (IFU), and departmental standards to support quality, productivity, and customer service objectives.

Essential Functions

Performs decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer's Instructions for Use (IFU).

Operates sterile processing equipment, including washers, sterilizers, and related technologies, following departmental policies and regulatory requirements.

Inspects instruments and equipment for cleanliness, functionality, and completeness; identifies items requiring repair or replacement.

Assembles instrument trays, procedure sets, and equipment according to standardized tray listings and quality standards.

Utilizes instrument tracking systems to document processing activities and maintain traceability of reusable medical devices.

Maintains inventory of sterile supplies, processing consumables, and departmental stock to support operational needs.

Transports instruments, equipment, and supplies to support procedural and patient care areas.

Recognizes and communicates equipment malfunctions, processing concerns, quality issues, and safety risks to appropriate personnel.

Complies with applicable regulatory, accreditation, infection prevention, and departmental standards.

Participates in training, competency validation, and continuous improvement activities.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? Yes

Licenses and Credentials: Certified Registered Central Service Technician [CRCST] - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or C.S.P.D.T - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician - Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc required

Experience: Experience as a Central Sterile Technician or similar role in a healthcare setting 1-2 years required

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Working knowledge of sterile processing principles, instrumentation, sterilization methods, and infection prevention standards.

Proficiency in instrument assembly, packaging, sterilization, and equipment handling.

Ability to follow detailed procedures, quality standards, and safety protocols.

Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy.

Effective communication and teamwork skills

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Understanding of workflow prioritization and departmental operations in a healthcare environment.
