Overview

This job is responsible for the education and quality assessments of the hospital's Sterile Processing Program according to standards set by regulatory agency guidelines. This position works with leadership to maintain consistent high standards in the training and education processes of Sterile Processing Technicians to assure that the department meets or exceeds the requirements of nationally recognized accrediting organizations.

Responsibilities and Duties

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Develop, plan, implement and evaluate educational programs to meet the needs of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) to aid in the professional development of staff.
  • Provide a comprehensive departmental orientation to all new personnel and required training to all staff on an ongoing basis. Coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate the orientation process.
  • Provide a comprehensive and technical orientation, education, and training program for the sterile processing staff.
  • Ensure the competency of all SPD staff and maintain departmental education records in compliance with regulatory guidelines along with performing quarterly audits of employee records.
  • Oversee quality and infection control initiatives for SPD.
  • Provide training and education to staff to prepare them for national certification examinations.
  • Provide instructions and in‑service on new products, procedures, and equipment in a manner that identifies and prevents resource loss and maintains safety.
  • Other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education

  • Required – High School diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred – Bachelor’s Degree; additional degrees, business training, experience, and certifications may be combined to meet minimum qualifications.

Work Experience

  • Required – 3 years’ experience working with and leading teams
  • Preferred – 2 years’ experience working in sterile processing
  • Preferred – Experience as a scrub tech or surgical tech in a hospital setting
  • Preferred – Experience with an instrument tracking system (e.g., ABACUS)

Certifications

  • Required – Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), must be obtained within 2 years of hire
  • OR Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT)
  • OR Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Good working knowledge of instruments, and of the operation/workings of the OR; able to readily understand their issues and requests.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OR terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self‑starter with the ability to work independently, set priorities, be flexible, multi‑task, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Detail oriented; excellent organizational and documentation skills.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Heavy work – Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue. The incumbent works in a patient‑care area and may be exposed to hazardous medications or waste.
