Overview

The St. Charles Health System’s Sterile Processing Education Coordinator assists the new caregivers in completing the clinical orientation process; serves as a role model to teach, guide, and support the orientee and existing caregivers. Assists with identifying the educational needs of the staff. Able to proficiently clean, decontaminate, assemble, sterilize, and distribute equipment and instruments used within the hospital. This position does not directly manage other caregivers, however may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.

Essential Functions And Duties
  • Surgical Sterile Processing: decontamination, instrument assembly, case cart and procedure preparation, and advanced equipment operation and inspection.
  • Identifies, coordinates and/or implements educational offerings.
  • Recognizes individual learning styles and knowledge of the principles of adult learning theory, and adapts offerings to maximize effectiveness.
  • Evaluates educational effectiveness.
  • Provides support and assistance for staff during times of changing practice.
  • Coordinates the department orientation process for new caregivers.
  • Coordinates and oversees clinical and required education.
  • Coordinates quality reviews (audits, regulatory requirements, etc.).
  • Provides on-going assessment of staff to ensure consistency and quality of their service.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and supports Evidence Based Practice and Best Practice standards.
  • Develops and coordinates sterile processing competencies.
  • Develops yearly education plan for staff.
  • Collaborates with manager/supervisors to identify and meet changing educational needs.
  • Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects.
  • Supports Value Improvement Practice (VIP- Lean) principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change.
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.
  • Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the organization’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings.
  • Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
Education
  • Required: High school diploma or GED. Must be willing to take additional courses as requested.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree
Licensure/Certification/Registration
  • Required: Current CBSPD or IAHCSMM certification in Sterile Processing.
  • Preferred: Advanced instrument handling certification. Advanced knowledge of AAMI and AORN procedures and policies.
Experience
  • REQUIRED: One year of sterile processing experience.
  • PREFERRED: Two to four years of Central Sterile experience and/or past educator experience.
