Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Sterile Processing Coordinator position will oversee and coordinate the activities of the Sterile Processing department and service line, as appropriate, including ensuring new employees are properly oriented and trained, monitoring workflow and volume of the work, and reviewing and maintaining department supply needs. This position is responsible for the monthly schedule and daily shift assignments, staff performance evaluation feedback to the appropriate manager, and assisting in the development of the departmental budget. The Sterile Processing Coordinator will maintain consistent and continuous workflow between the Operating Room (OR) and Sterile Processing and is responsible for assisting the Manager in meeting all regulatory requirements for the unit related to these activities.

Qualifications
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.).
  • Experience: Six years of Sterile Processing experience in an acute care hospital.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Sterile Processing certification: CSCST or CSPDT; Instrument Specialist certification: CIS or CSIS.
  • Skills and Abilities: Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English relevant to safety and essential functions. Ability to communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers with customer service focus and positive language principles. Advanced knowledge of infection control, decontamination, and sterilization techniques. Knowledge to operate, troubleshoot, and train staff on equipment including sterilizers, washers, ultrasonic washers, and cart washers. Proficiency in basic computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Office) and electronic instrument tracking system, if applicable. Ability to follow manufacturers’ instructions for use and departmental policies. Maintains patient and family privacy.
Essential Functions
  • People Essential Functions: Coordinate and assign processing services based on Technician acuity, ensure decontamination and reprocessing are performed timely, serve as primary resource for staff, mentor and promote teamwork with OR staff, maintain workflow between OR and Sterile Processing, communicate effectively with the interprofessional health care team, coach staff in communication, and collaborate on employee engagement improvements.
  • Service Essential Functions: Manage daily interface between sterile processing, surgery, materials management and other departments to ensure supplies and instruments are available; partner with SP Liaison to prepare items for the following day’s OR needs; anticipate needs and obtain non-routinely available items prior to scheduled cases; plan and monitor staffing levels to ensure excellent service; regulate scheduling and assignments; provide daily management reports.
  • Quality/Safety Essential Functions: Primary quality assurance resource; review and revise policies to reflect industry standards; ensure compliance with Houston Methodist policies and regulatory guidelines; monitor sterilization processes using appropriate monitoring systems; track instrumentation with SP Liaison; maintain environment and documentation per AAMI, OSHA, and AORN guidelines.
  • Finance Essential Functions: Monitor staffing against budgeted targets; keep management informed of issues; maintain shift schedules and assist in budgeting needs; collaborate with Materials Management on supply needs.
  • Growth/Innovation Essential Functions: Identify practice changes and improvement opportunities; investigate evidence-based practices; support change initiatives; identify staff development opportunities; oversee new employee preceptorships; maintain My Development Plan.
