Job summary

Lam Research in Livermore, CA, is seeking a Metrology Process Engineer/microscopist to operate FEI/Thermo Fisher dual‑beam FIB tools and prepare TEM lamellae for imaging with in‑situ STEM detectors. This role supports a high‑volume workflow within Lam Microscopy Services.

You will collaborate with process engineers to locate regions of interest, optimize processing, interpret data, and contribute to new techniques while upholding data integrity and IP protection. Night shift hours apply.

Qualifications

• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of microscopy experience.
• Experience operating electron microscopes and dual-beam FIB tools.
• Familiarity with TEM sample preparation and data interpretation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare TEM lamellae using Thermo Fisher Helios dual-beam FIB tools and image with TEM.
• Set up, operate, and troubleshoot equipment.
• Handle sensitive customer samples and protect IP.

The impact you’ll make

As a Metrology Process Engineer/microscopist, you will operate several generations of FEI/Thermo Fisher dual-beam Helios focused ion beam (FIB) tools, including the latest microscopy models, to prepare transmission electron microscopy (TEM) lamellae or image prepared lamella samples using in-situ 30keV STEM detectors. The samples represent a diverse set of processes across integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing products and will provide a dynamic set of challenges and opportunities for long-term growth. Your expertise and knowledge play a crucial role on our process team and in our customers’ success, impacting the next generation of semiconductor breakthroughs. This role is part of Lam Microscopy Services, supporting a large base of process engineers at Lam and handling a high volume of samples from multiple business units.

What you’ll do

• The primary function is preparing TEM lamellae using Thermo Fisher Helios dual-beam FIB tools, to be imaged either using in-situ 30keV STEM detectors or 200keV TEM imaging.


• Set up, operate, and troubleshoot equipment.


• Ensure proper handling of sensitive customer samples and intellectual property.


• Work with process engineers to understand how to locate regions of interest, optimize sample processing, interpret data, and troubleshoot when data does not meet expectations.


• Maintain the integrity of experiments and data to provide valid results.


• Actively participate in developing new techniques to expedite sample processing.


• Provide new learnings and developments to other team members through documentation, presentations, and training sessions.


• Work with process engineers to create and maintain a healthy, inclusive, and collaborative working environment.


• Adhere to Lam's core values while maintaining a professional atmosphere and fostering positive working relationships.


• Work schedule Gyd (night shift, 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM), Sunday to Thursday, 40 hours each week.

Who we’re looking for

• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field, with 2 years of related microscopy experience.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience working in an academic or professional laboratory setting.


• Experience operating electron microscopes and/or dual-beam focused ion beam (FIB) tools.


• Experience with TEM sample preparation.


• Experience creating technical documentation.


• Knowledge of semiconductor devices and the industry.


• Experience handling and protecting sensitive customer intellectual property.

CA San Francisco Bay Area Salary Range for this position: $73,000.00 - $159,000.00.

The above salary range for this position is relevant to applicants that reside or work onsite in the California, San Francisco Bay Area only. Salary offers will depend on factors that include the location you work from, your level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience and comparison to other employees already in this role. Actual salary may vary from salary offered due to numerous factors including but not limited to unpaid time off, unpaid leave, company mandated shutdown, and other relevant factors.
