Job summary

Big Top Manufacturing is seeking a Steel Fabrication Supervisor to drive production goals, uphold quality and safety, and lead a night shift. You will coordinate workflow, review drawings and work orders, and ensure on-time completion.

  • Previous fabrication experience required; lead/supervisor or equivalent shop leadership experience preferred.
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings and blueprints.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews drawings, work orders, and specs to ensure alignment with project requirements and standards.
  • Assigns daily work based on priorities, skill level, equipment, and delivery dates; monitors progress and adjusts resources.
  • Ensures night shift activities comply with safety regulations and quality standards.
  • Conducts in-process inspections to verify quality and conformance to drawings.
  • Identifies delays and develops alternative plans to protect schedule and throughput.
  • Investigates non-conformance, performs root-cause analysis, and implements corrective actions.
  • Trains fabricators on shop expectations, equipment use, procedures, and safety practices; coordinates cross-training.
  • Maintains records of production output, labor hours, and material usage.
  • Troubleshoots equipment issues and performs repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Ensures equipment calibration and maintenance per guidelines.

The Steel Fabrication Supervisor is responsible for ensuring production goals, quality standards, and safety requirements are consistently met. This role coordinates workflow and monitors project timelines to maintain efficient shop performance. The supervisor enforces compliance with company policies, industry standards, and safety regulations while driving continuous improvement in productivity and workmanship. Strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to troubleshoot equipment or process issues are essential to success in this position. This position will report directly to the day shift Steel Fabrication Supervisor.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities:** Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Reviews drawings, work orders, and specifications to ensure all work aligns with project requirements and company standards.

Assigns daily work based on production priorities, employee skill level, equipment availability, material readiness, and required delivery dates; monitors progress throughout the shift and adjusts resources to protect schedule, quality, and throughput.

Ensures all night shift Steel Fab activities comply with safety regulations, quality standards, and best practices.

Conducts in-process inspections to verify quality, accuracy, and conformance to drawings.

Identifies potential delays and develops alternative plans to maintain production timelines.

Investigates non-conformance issues; performs root cause analyses and implements corrective actions.

Trains new fabricators on shop expectations, equipment use, fabrication procedures, quality standards, safety practices, and production processes; identifies skill gaps across the team and coordinates cross-training, qualification development, and coaching to improve flexibility, consistency, and bench strength.

Promotes employee engagement, accountability, and teamwork while maintaining a positive and productive work environment.

Maintains accurate records of production output, labor hours, and material usage.

Identifies and troubleshoots minor equipment issues, conducting repairs as needed to minimize downtime.

Ensures all equipment is properly calibrated, serviced, and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and company standards.

Required Skills And Abilities

Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a diverse team.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to become forklift certified within 90 days.

Ability to accurately use ERP/MRP systems and basic production documentation.

Knowledge of steel fabrication processes and shop equipment operation.

Reasoning abilities to include the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; the ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Mathematical skills to include the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as add, subtract, multiply, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Language skills to include the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; and the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Previous fabrication experience required. Previous lead, supervisor, or equivalent shop leadership experience preferred.

Physical Demands

Experience in a quality-driven manufacturing environment preferred.

  • Must be able to operate in a production environment with exposure to noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to handle or feel.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and sit.
  • Must be able to accurately exchange information with subordinates, co-workers, and management.
  • Must be able to lift (50lbs) on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to traverse facilities and machinery by climbing, balancing, lifting, walking, stooping, and carrying materials.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places with appropriate safety precautions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme heat; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Hearing and eye protection is required.
