Job summary

Commercial Steel Erection, Inc. in Madison, WI, seeks a Construction Supervisor to direct activities of crews on structural steel projects, including buildings and towers. You will oversee up to 50 employees, coordinate multiple crews, and ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance on site.

The role requires a four-year college program or 2–4 years related experience, ability to travel, and a valid driver's license. Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Requires supervising personnel and coordinating job activity, safety rules, and emergency procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and understand basic engineering of loads.
• Knowledge of OSHA, DOT rules, and AISC/AWS standards; maintain quality control.
• Must possess valid driver's license and meet MVR criteria; travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Organize, plan and prioritize work across multiple crews.
• Inspect equipment, structures and materials, ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
• Assist in set-up/knock-down of cranes and equipment, perform daily equipment checks.
• Direct foremen and crews to execute building designs per plans and specs.
• Maintain accurate defect reports and communicate with office.

Job description

Reports To: Project Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary Directs activities of workers concerned with construction of buildings, warehouses, factories, structural steel towers or other construction projects by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assumes responsibility of organizing, planning and prioritizing work
   • a. Familiar with supervisory personnel, job activity to be performed, hazard communication program, safety rules and regulations, and emergency action procedures.
   • b. Maintains telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive instructions.
2. Assumes responsibility of Inspecting equipment, Structures and/ or material
   • a. Has practical knowledge of Regulatory Compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations, CSE, Inc. Rules and Regulations and Site-Specific Rules and Regulations.
   • b. Responsible for inspecting and insuring quality control (QCI)
   • c. Assists in set-up and knock-down of cranes, washes and fuels truck upon return to the yard.
   • d. Performs daily inspection on, equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
   • e. Signals crane according to signals from qualified signal person.
   • f. Assembles/disassembles boom sections according to job parameters and safe operating procedures.
   • g. Completes defect reports for any deficiencies and returns form to office.
   • h. Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
   • i. Directs Foreman underneath to accomplish building design.
   • j. Must have thorough understanding of blueprints.
   • k. Superintendent must know how calculate basic engineering of beam and column loads.
   • l. Manages multiple crews on a jobsite under CSE standards.
   • m. Has knowledge of AISC and AWS standards and procedures, as well as OSHA.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages Up to 10 subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of Up to 50 employees in the Steel Erection Department. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Four-year college or university program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Driver's License, must meet CSE, Inc. MVR criteria.

Other Skills and Abilities: This position requires the use of emotional control and the ability to accept responsibility and demand the same of subordinates.
